... because our son is having his "squad" of friends over for one of their epic slumber parties tonight. One friend is leaving to go to Mexico tomorrow, another two go to Europe and Mexico next week, and then the gradual migration to various colleges begins. So, tonight is their last chance for a get-together ( Read more... )

We're seeing more wild turkeys in my area too. Hmmm...

There are coyotes along the bike path (increasing numbers of them, unfortunately), so you'd think there would be natural predators. People are allowed to hunt them, too-- with a license and on their own property.

But that's got to seem a little weird.

I still say the ones near the office are begging to be mowed down and tossed into the trunk for dinner...

Now I'm worried about that bird!!! Sheesh, you with the sheep and now the turkeys.

And the bees and wasps! Sorry to hear about that. Painful and slightly scary.

Have fun tonight!

That turkey can't be helped. It's a miracle it's still okay! Though maybe it'll fly up over the sound wall and into someone's yard.

The yellow jackets are so aggravating. I would happily kill them all!

A few months ago when there was a turkey sitting on the hood of a truck parked outside my condo complex. The next day I saw one walking on campus and since then I've seen a few wandering around nearby streets. I am at the foot of the Berkeley hills and the park at the top of the hills has a ton of wild turkeys so this isn't *that* unusual, but they certainly don't seem shy.

There was a mountain lion spotted near campus last week.
(Happens every few years... I think they follow the deer that wander down from the park.) Maybe it will cull the turkey population.

Hope it isn't too crazy tonight!

Mountain lions scare me-- they occasionally get seen on the parkway, probably coming down out of the foothills. :O

Coyotes have crept into our neighborhood, which is over a mile from the parkway (the only nearby wild spot). People are worried that they're carrying off housecats. :(

It's almost midnight, and there are 6 boys here. I'm about to go to bed, and hope they're quiet enough so the grownups can sleep!

I believe wasps, like bees, have yellow "blood" (hemolymph), so the yellow smear could have equally been the blood of either. I feel hemolymph is more likely to make a "splash" or smear than pollen.

The pain level was so much lower than the yellow-jacket sting I'd gotten there about a month ago, though. Same spot (between the bike glove and the index finger), so it's a sadly familiar experience!

I do at least know that you can't afford to squash yellow jackets or wasps, or you will cause pheromone leakage that will bring the rest of the hive down upon you for vengeance. :O

there must be something particularly delicious about that part of your hand. either that or the yellow jackets and bees like to make things hard for themselves. i mean, why sting an available part of you when they could crawl into your glove?

did the wild turkeys spend the winter trying to make lots of little turkeys, and that's why there's so many of them? i too am surprised that more of them aren't roadkill, if they're hanging out on the side of the road.

how'd the sleepover go? was it weird that the one guy brought his girlfriend?

I'm not sure what draws them to my gloves in the first place, but I wonder if they don't think they've found some secret, special hiding place in there? I keep thinking of the yellow jackets that got under a corner of the roof and built a nest inside the eaves, thinking they were hidden in the ground. \o ( ... )
