Roll up, roll up, the tent is busting...

We watched The Tall Guy with our son last night, mainly because we felt he really needed to see the glorious satire that is Elephant! (The Musical). The whole mini movie of the highlights used to be a single clip on youtube, but that link above takes you to the first of three (21 - 23). So fabulously, utterly wrong! Someone did a fantastic job ( Read more... )

movies, running, recs-vids, books, random

LOL! The clip you shared of Elephant! They tried so hard back then, didn't they. A treat to see Emma Thompson and Geraldine James, though. Loved GJ especially.

Sounds like you were pretty productive in spite of the few things you didn't get to, or finish. I have to read more! You've inspired me. :-)

It is such an excellent take-down of that whole Broadway musical genre, and really-- once you've heard those tunes, they'll stick with you. Especially the "Roll up, roll up" song.

The whole movie is fun, and Emma Thompson is marvelous in it. :)

I'm kind of a compulsive reader, and having multiple books going at a time is really typical. The gym book, the bedside book, the around-the-house book (which might be one in hardcopy and a different one on the Kindle). If I read as fast as my son does (lightning speed), I would conquer still more! :D

Since taking part i lj_idol the entries are what I have been reading, but normally I read a nit like you, I have several books I'm reading scattered around. Always have a book in my purse. Always. Though unless it's a real page turner it can take a year or more because it's my waiting book. I read it when I am waiting for the bus, for appointments. I've got three going on Kindle right now, sort of: The Sheltering Sky, The Swan Thieves, and Killing Jesus. The last one I need for a review.

I'll read, or try to read, almost anything. Have only thrown a book at the wall a few times. There is only so much a reader can be expected to take. :-)

I pretty much always take a book to doctors' appts., etc., because I have an overwhelming hatred of being bored. ;)

Our daughter wound up with a 7 1/2 hour leg of a flight about a week ago where she had nothing to read or do. I asked why she didn't plan ahead and bring a book, and she said, "Why would I do that?" :O

Being of the Smartphone generation, she'd probably hoped to watch free movies as she had during the flight home, but different airlines, different benefits, so if that plan failed... Seven and a half hours! What the heck is wrong with her? :O

The Tall Guy!!! FTW!!!

How are you liking The Swan Thieves? I tried so hard to read The Raven Boys and just couldn't get it to stick. I've put it on the summer reading list...see if I can get into it later this year.

So far so good on The Swan Thieves (I've read most of Kate's POV by now, so I'm decently well into it).

I'm surprised you didn't like The Raven Boys. The characters really are more like young adults than like typical teens, and though it took a few chapters for me, once the characters began to show their insides rather than their exteriors, I was hooked. Plus, you can't beat the plot twist about 4/5ths through!

I'm hoping the second time will be the charm for you. :D

Sounds like you saw all of The Tall Guy, then? We love that movie, and our son loved it despite the fact that it is technically a romantic comedy (though I think comedy is the primary genre there, and romantic comedy is secondary). He has issues with the romantic comedy genre. I usually like it, unless it's too sappy/stupid. Weird? Oh yeah, that generally works for me. :D

I was similarly concerned about a book from Ronan's POV, but like you said, he's a lot more compelling in his own voice, and the author likes to jump around to other people, anyway. I really do like those books. I'm looking forward to the final one. What ship do you like that isn't canon?

I liked Man from U.N.C.L.E., and then I went to see what there was on Ao3, and there's some pretty nice slash, which makes total sense given the chemistry between the Cavill and Hammer characters.

Yes, who knew what interesting things (and powers) were going on inside Ronan? Wow ( ... )

I don't think it's weird. We have to be attracted to a pairing in some way for it to interest us, I think. I didn't really notice Cavill's accent in U.N.C.L.E. Maybe because Hammer was going for it so hard. Haha.

Also, I don't want to comment on plot things in the Raven Cycle, because I read the available ones last summer and I'm not completely sure which things happen in which book, so I don't want to be a giant spoiler. When you're caught up!

the man from u.n.c.l.e. was so fun, but i don't remember henry cavill's accent at all! i was probably too charmed by the bickering and bantering and alicia vikander's wardrobe to notice. her clothes were just so fucking cute. i don't think henry is that great an actor, so i'm not surprised his attempt at an american accent was distracting.

The 60s "Mod" era was adorable, though I think also not part of the period when the film was set! Just a few years out of skew. Details, details...

This is the only thing I've seen Henry in, and it was... not of the good. So, maybe that's part of the issue?

the only other thing i've seen him in is man of steel, which i didn't really like. but i don't remember his accent in that either.
