I got inculcated with that "be nice behavior." What I was doing could always be interrupted but not vice versa. I finally learned to say fuck it (and them). "I have headphones on/am reading/am typing. You're interrupting and I'm trying to concentrate."

I get called "bitch" a lot but at least I can sift throught the assholes quickly.

Since I've had similar moments of connection (including large family stuff) as a Catholic, you definitely shouldn't worry that you're saying identity is anything but our own. Because you are saying it is something we create ourselves. To me at least I thought you said that our identities mean something to all of us, and it could even feel similar when they're different, so insulting that is even worse than it already is. (Sorry for personalizing this but when you were describing how your Bat Mitzvah felt it just sounded so familiar I had to say it

So I don't look much like what people think my ethnicity should look like and I hear this shit pretty often. Lately my tolerance for this crap has pretty much evaporated.
The last time some stupid asshole said after cracking a really offensive joke about the women of my culture to me and I called him on it the way I always do he said to me" Wow you don't look Indian!" ( It's native Canadian asshole or fist nations if that's too many syllables for you)
My response could only be and will probably now always be " Funny, you don't look like an ignorant douche-bag"

I can apparently only have tolerance and understanding for this garbage for a certain amount of time in one lifetime. And then? I'm fucking done.
