I'm getting ready to go to bed when I hear the cats making noise out in the living room. I go out to check, just in case, not really expecting it to be anything. I started to hope when I realised all three cats were clustered around something, staring intently. I went over and there was Hamlet, curled up defensively and trying to strike at Robin

I'm glad you found him.

When I was growing up, my brother had a water snake for a while. It got out once,and I found it by getting up very early one morning and seeing my laundry pile moving while I was only half awake. I think I screamed. I seem to remember that my father made him let it go again shortly after that.
