a few questionable questions

1) What sort of detergent do you use for fleece? is anything with bleach ok, or is that too strong for the pigs?
2) How do you put an end to nasty calcium (at least, i'm assuming that's what it is) deposits in urine?
3) Have any of you ever used this product? My girls love it, but I'm holding off giving them more than one or two a month; I'm not too ( Read more... )

bedding: fleece, care: cleaning out, diet: treats

1) Personally I don't use bleach, firstly as I think it's a bit harsh, and secondly because I don't use it normally as I boycott all animal tested products that I can. A normal detergent is fine, and you can add a little vinegar to the wash and it will help get rid of any strong odours ( ... )

Seconding the vinegar. We buy it in bulk so we can wash the cage and get the boy stink out!

Also, off topic, but if your sink is ever clogged and you need a good, natural way to unclog it: vinegar and baking soda. It seriously works.

There's only one ingredient: naturally dehydrated apples.

So I don't see it as particularly dangerous. But why not go for fresh apples instead of paying hideous amounts for the dried stuff?

A lot of dried fruits also grow teeny amounts of mold on them though, even commercial stuff. I know because I've a friend who is allergic to molds and mushrooms and even licking a piece of dried fruits causes blisters on a grown man! So I don't think that'd be awesome for pigguses...

Ahh yeah, I guess 'naturally dehydrated apples' can't be all bad- I was just wondering if anyone else had used them before. (now i feel like an idiot haha)

And for some strange reason, my girls prefer these to normal apples (but that's not to say I'm providing them solely, or even in excess of 10% of their diet, with dried goods.)

Because fruit is sweeter when it has been dried.

My pig will choose a raisin over a grape any day... now ask me how often she gets raisins? Hah! If she asks for food and I give her anything less than two leaves of lettuce or half a big fruit she comes back to complain of neglect. If I give her a single raisin she considers herself lucky and doesn't come out for a few hours. :-P

You could dry your own apples at home in the oven. Slice paper thin and use a low temperature for a longer time. Make only the stuff for the day, and you can eat some too! Still... fresh really is better.

I think dried fruit is ok in moderation, but it has a higher sugar content so it should be a VERY special treat they get every once in a while. JuJu loves raisins so I give her those every so often... mostly when she's being a good little pig.... which is rare so it works out ;P
