Random Fandom Fun Poll #8

Jan 08, 2012 11:08

One Spuffy-based BtVS question today (although you can easily substitute in your Buffy OTP of choice) and two Whedonverse questions that I've been curious about for some time because these women have a lot of similarities and are both beloved by fandom; please only answer the latter two if you've seen both AtS and Dollhouse.

I definitely like having the Scoobies around - the only time I tend to get frustrated with them are when the author starts writing their romantic plots (if they have them) with as much intensity and screentime as Buffy and Spike, because I don't much care. Heh.

And I liked Adelle right up until the point Joss reverted to type and decided he couldn't live without having another one of his British characters deal with problems by getting drunk on whiskey before mooning around being sarcastic - just as we also discovered her hidden streak of British hardassery. I think I prefer Lilah even to S1 Adelle, though.

As for their contest of wills - I picked Not Sure, but I like think they'd more readily negotiate a situation that suited both of them, rather than look to win. I don't think either of their moral codes are so incompatible that they'd ever come into conflict over something one or other of them wouldn't be willing to bend on for the right amount of money or some other offer. :D

Hee! I hadn't thought about it in those terms. That does get frustrating, especially if it's a couple you particularly don't care about.

When I was first wording the question, I thought of it in terms of, If there were a contest, who would win? And I thought, similarly as you, well, of course they would figure out how to make it not a zero sum game so they'd both get ahead. I figured that would be an easy way out answer, though (in the sense that everyone would pick it), so then I started thinking, What would happen if they were just fundamentally opposed on some black-or-white issue?

I haven't seen Dollhouse. :-\ I should get on that.

I prefer to have the Scoobies around in any fic that's longer than a one-shot, but if they aren't around it doesn't put me off the fic, as long as there's at least an explanation of why they're missing. For example, if they aren't around because they're all off in other places doing Slayer/Council business. It is frustrating, however, to come across a multi-chap fic that doesn't even mention them. And in anything set more than a few years post NFA, I'd rather them be around.

Meh, I personally don't think you're missing out on much, although I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority. IMO there are a few really good characters (like Adelle) and a lot of phenomenal acting from the supporting cast, but the plot is not well constructed enough to be worth it (others would vehemently disagree on that last point). However, I may just be biased because I really liked the beginning of S2 and watched it in real time (with the anxiety of not knowing when it was going to be canceled) with high, unmet expectations (watching it on DVD is probably a very different experience); I also don't care for Eliza Dushku, and not liking the lead puts a damper on things. Never mind, you should probably watch it.

"And in anything set more than a few years post NFA, I'd rather them be around."

I'd feel sad if they weren't there! I'd feel like Buffy had lost something.

Lol. That was a fun comment :D

It would be so sad if they just disappeared! I have a lot of Scooby feelings that I can never seem to articulate fully, but I actually have a quite a bit of head canon for them post-Chosen. I'm a big fan of fic that explores their relationships in the first couple of years after they leave Sunnydale. Because I think they have their fair share of issues to work through, but I think they can and will come out stronger.

:) I have faith in them, too.

1. I go both ways. As long as the scoobies aren't actively pissing me off I like them, but don't need them.

2. I LOVE Lilah. She was perfect. When I watch Angel Season 5 I replace Eve with Lilah in my head and it's a million times better.

3. I picked not sure. Lilah is brilliant and bad but she does have a soft gushy center that might hurt her.

2. S5 is my favorite season of AtS but it would have been SO MUCH BETTER if Lilah had been there instead of Eve. My only concern would be Wesley hurting her by going after Fred. :(

Pshaw. Hopefully Lilah would come to her senses by then and fixate on Spike instead of Wesley.

LOL! Oh man, Spike and Lilah would be great together. I'd love to see them as catty enemies. and Lilah would so enjoy pitting Spike and Angel against each other.

1. I really like having the scoobies around, but only if they are IC/multi-dimensional, even if their roles are small. If an author is going to use one of them as a one-note source of conflict, I'd usually rather they just made up an OC.

2. I feel a bit in the minority here, because while I had to try really hard to like Lilah I loved Adelle, right from the start and continued to love her up 'till the end.

3. This one was tougher, but I'mmna have to go with Adelle. Lilah occasionally had to change her course to accomodate her bosses, but when Adelle's bosses got on her, she fought back and won.

1. Yeah, I dislike when an author makes them OOC just to create conflict (usually to victimize Spike so that Buffy realizes what a great *woobie* he is; I feel like that's Xander's role in a good portion of "fix it" S6 fic). Haven't seen it in much post-Chosen fic so far, thankfully.

3. Ooh, good point about Adelle. OTOH, IIRC Lilah never stopped believing in W&H, whereas Adelle was actually disillusioned about Rossum. I wonder if Lilah would have fought back too if she had grown to hate W&H as Adelle hated Rossum (and I really do mean that 'IIRC,' b/c I've tried to block S4 as much as possible).

I find it hard to write certain spuffy fics without the scoobies. However for post Chosen fics either or is fine with me. I can see Buffy and Spike meeting on their own and doing crazy things together or Spike meeting up with Buffy plus the scoobies for hero stuff.

I didn't watch much of Dollhouse but I do like Lilah Morgan a lot, so for now I picked Lilah!

As for the third, not sure simply because I don't know enough about Adelle.

I suspected Lilah would win the favorite question, if not by a wide margin. Adelle is excellent, too, though, one of the best parts of DH if you ever watch more.

I plan to try to get more into Dollhouse...just, probably going to take a while. Adelle seemed like an interesting character when I watched though.
