Lucid dreaming
Just occasionally, I am able to tell myself that I'm in a dream and that I need to wake up. Last night it saved me from drowning after an enormous green wall of water overwhelmed my house. And I haven't picked up Tolkien in months and months!

It's ten years today since Dorothy Dunnett died, leaving behind an impressive body of work and many dedicated readers. She was a great writer and a gracious lady, and she brought a tremendous amount of pleasure into people's lives.

For my birthday, Sahib has bought tickets for Elbow at the O2 on Tuesday. Amazing! They are my favourite band for many years and as I have the whole of The Seldom Seen Kid committed to memory there will be lots of embarrassing singing along - but somehow I don't think I shall be the only one.

I've just started How to Write a Sentence and How to Read One by Stanley Fish. It was recommended to me by someone who thought I would love it and they were probably right. I've only got as far as page three and already I have to share.

Kennel cough
I'm trying to track down a book for a friend in Canada: Death at Pompeia's Wedding by Rosemary Rowe, published by Severn House in hard cover in 2008 and paperback in 2009. This time last week a sore throat started - one of those once-in-a-decade ones that make your ears hurt too. I remember sitting bolt upright in bed at about 3 am as part of a dream that I'd swallowed a sharp sword.
