I've got a lot of time for Peter Lorre, almost no matter who he's playing. If you've never seen a movie called Three Strangers (1946), track it down-totally cast against type, a part the studio wanted for David Niven. The director, Jean Negulesco, insisted on Lorre. I don't think he was a romantic lead before or ever again, except in the eyes of his audience.
