Curiously Strong

Not really much to say, except that I am less sick than I was yesterday, though not quite well. UPS just tossed a box onto the front porch, and it turned out to be my copies of Tails of Tales of Pain and Wonder (the 56-page chapbook that comes free with Tales of Pain and Wonder). Bill Schafer at subpress has given me permission to auction one of ( Read more... )

I don't know, but I can ask.

'Neil Jordan's The Brave One, which was really much, much better than I'd expected it to be.'

Neil Jordan's movies usually are.

Except In Dreams. Which I found so unwatchably inane I think I might have to see it again. Because when I saw it, I had his brilliant previous film The Butcher Boy still fresh in my memory, and maybe it was an unfair comparison. Apples and oranges, and all that. Also high expectations: 'Neil Jordan? Annette Bening? Robert Downey Jr.? Stephen Rea? Script by Bruce Robinson? I must have this movie right now plzkthx,' and then I saw it and was like, 'Do what now?'

I've seen it twice now. I actually like it quite a lot, except for the final "revenge" scene, which I've always pretended was forced upon Jordan by the studio after advance screenings. But, yeah, I know I'm in the minority on this one.

I figured it was a combo of studio interference and a particularly drunk Bruce Robinson throwing everything including his cousin's knickers into the movie.

You want minority? I liked Catwoman and Gigli. Beat that.

My only real criticism is that Erica Baine's fiancé really should have been a woman, if only because Foster is harder than ever to buy as a straight woman. Terrence Howard was a wonderful choice for Detective Mercer, and he and Foster have a chemistry. So, yeah, a nice surprise. Maybe it's time to go on a Neil Jordan binge...

I thought that too. I think it would have added another dynamic to the film that was lacking. I don't know why she always has to be in a heterosexual role, even if her "male counterpart" is absent.

Speaking of Jordan, I'm looking forward to his adaptation of Joe Hill's Heart-Shaped Box.

Agreed; however, Foster may fear that once she goes gay in a film, there's no going back, and there are even fewer good roles for gay women than for straight women. Then again, if someone's going to break that particular glass ceiling, she'd be the one who could do it.

I have become absolutely addicted to the "lol cat" things. And I'm in awe of the power of our feline friends to reduce otherwise intelligent, sane people to writing silly gibberish on photos, and laughing themselves silly at them.

Haven't thought of Neil Jordan in years, and didn't realize he directed The Brave One. Can't remember the last time I saw The Company of Wolves.

Long ago. TOO long ago.
