The Power of Fear

Oct 13, 2005 11:06

Last night I attended one of the monthly Freedom Forums that is sponsored by Mayor Rocky Anderson. This month's discussion was on the "Freedom to Criticize Government" and it more specifically referred to our Mayor's criticism of George W. Bush when he visited Salt Lake City August 22, 2005 when he spoke at the Veterans of Foreign Wars conference. ( Read more... )

It's a good thing Rocky's attempts to instill fear on our local journalists hasn't worked.

They still move on with their lives despite being blacklisted and berated by the mayor for excercising their first amendment rights.

He's not a first amendment hero, he's a political hypocrite who dresses himself up as a martyr when a blogger criticizes his views against the government

then turns around and blacklists journalists who are critical of his own administration.

It makes me ill. Especiall when those of us who should be joining the outrage worship him for taking pot- shots at shared political enemies instead of focusing on important things like freedom of speech in SLC.

Hi Anonymous,

I haven't heard of the blacklisting. Do you have any links to news stories about it you could refer me to?

Also, would you please sign your comments with your first name?

Thanks!

The only people who have something to fear about freedom of speech are those who have something to hide from those who would seek to speak about it.

Shameful but true!

"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. . . . corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed."
-- U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, Nov. 21, 1864
(letter to Col. William F. Elkins)
Ref: The Lincoln Encyclopedia, Archer H. Shaw (Macmillan, 1950, NY)

Less than 6 months later on APRIL 14, 1865 Abe was assassinated. Hmmm...

Seems like suppression of the freedom of speech goes back a long way to me!

Namaste

From James

RE. blacklist

http://slcspin.blogspot.com/2005/10/mayor-anderson-you-are-government.html

it was also brought up again in today's (Sunday's DesNews). It was an article about how Rocky's base will stick with him no matter what. Because leadership worship is a powerful thing. Rocky needs only to press the right buttons and say the right words and his base shows up. Kind of like Bush. A few key words and his base shows up

No questions for either of them. Only blind loyalty.

In our day it's positively shameful.

I received an email from Brady Snyder, the Deseret News reporter that wrote the article that you refer to. This is his response to my email:

It is true that Mayor Anderson and his spokesman are no longer returning our calls. They haven't for 13 days now. They still do send us press releases, however.
