Milliways: Holland, Oct 5th 1944

Nov 13, 2007 22:27

Holland so far had been a massive letdown for the American forces there. Operation Market Garden wasn't the exact best of campaings the 101st had been in. In fact, compaired to Normandy, it was the first time the whole Division had faced failure ( Read more... )

Bonzo hits the ground. Well, not hits...more like falls. But he appears on the ground on a certain cold, sunny day, in a time and place that he doesn't know and that is totally unfamiliar to him. He looks around for a few minutes, and sees dead bodies.

"Uh..." Where the HELL am I?

There's no sound except the breeze when it picks up shifting the turning leaves of the apple trees nearby. Off in the distance smoke rises from some attack or another- more than likely a jeep that's been set on fire or a house by enemy bombardment. An occasional machine gun blast echoes somewhere off into the distance in a buuuurp-buuuurp sound to be answered by a pahpahpah somewhere else.

This is clearly, if Bonzo hadn't figured out, a war zone.

Oh, he knows it's a warzone...he knows what one looks like all too well, so it takes about a minute to figure out what one looks like on a bad day. Rather instinctively, he looks around. Nobody here... Pause. And it's sure not t-shirt weather. Looking around to make sure that he's alone, he decides rather quickly that he does not want to be caught in what sure as hell looks like a Nazi uniform from the old vids anytime soon...which leaves changing into one of the other uniforms as his only option to avoid freezing to death.

So, within a few minutes, he finds a not-too-bloody non-Nazi uniform on a very-much-dead body, and is soon (much to a bit of his disgust) changing into it, if just to avoid freezing to death.

The uniform that Bonzo picks is that of an American paratrooper of the 101st Airborne. On the right shoulder is the patch of a Screaming Eagle on a shield of black with AIRBORNE in yellow lettering arching over the top.

It's a rather warm uniform and, thankfully, Bonzo also has the brokein Corcoran jumpboots instead of the awful double-buckles. The other stripe on the sleeve is that of a Corporal. His helmet, should he remember to grab it, bears the spade of the 506th and the tick mark of 2nd Battalion. Weapons are also near- mostly M1 Garands, some ammo, gernades..whatever he feels like he would need off the two bodies are there.

As he gears up two figures appear down the road wearing similar uniforms though they may not be able to see each other with him being on the side of the dike.

It's an unsettling feeling, one moment being warm and peaceful and safe, and the next being somewhere completely different. Especially when that somewhere feels like a war zone. Al tenses as he hits the ground, trying to make himself as inconspicuous as he can, to buy himself time to figure out what has just happened and what he needs to do to keep himself safe.

There is noone around at the time giving the Dutch countryside near the city of Nijmegen. It's a tense feeling- one of those days where you know something is wrong on so many levels but you just aren't sure how. Maybe it is the warzone feeling that causes or..perhaps its more.

Much like with Bonzo there are a couple of dead American paratroopers close to where Al has landed at each bearing the Screaming Eagle of the 101st Airborne. If Ali knows his history then he should know what is going on.

He doesn't like being around dead people; it makes him nervous even under the best of circumstances, which these are not. And it feels a little disrespectful, what he's about to do, but... they're dead, they can't get more dead by how they're dressed. Unlike Al, with his flashy futuristic clothes, who's a very big target right about now.

He makes the sign of the cross, murmurs a quiet prayer and sets about getting himself some new clothes.

Any filter through pockets would also bring about soldiers ID cards, some money, pictures of family members..anything the typical WWII paratrooper would have. Even K-rations.

Some distance down the road two figures wearing similar uniforms are approaching from the direction of the CP. To far off to yell to even if they could see each other.

The first thing Alex notices when he hits the ground is that it's cold. Colder than it had been back at the Bar. The next thing he notices is that he's not in Milliways anymore.

Then he notices the bodies.

"...shit."

Even in the distance the sounds of people- Americans- talking can be heard though it's faint.

However, there is one disadvantage for the new arrival. The bodies closer to him are German though if he wants to dare to cross the dike there should be a possible chance of finding something warmer to wear..

Alex has spent enough time in the world of combat to know to stay down until the shooting stops even if it is in the distance. The air smells like blood and sweat and he carefully crawls to the nearest body and looks at it trying to get a sense...

"...oh, hell."

There is no way he's putting that on. He's ex-military and he's not stupid but he's cold...he settles for a helmet and moves into a crouch, then decides to hell with it and moves towards the dike.

All goes quiet again save the voices somewhere down the road. When Alex makes it to the top of the dike where there is a road, noone is seen.

Halfway across the road is a body wearing an American uniform of a paratrooper, screaming eagle on its patch with stripes of a Corporal. If he is lucky..hey may be able to drag it across back to where he was. Thankfully the helmet he managed to pick up was also American.

A jeep speeds down the road with a lone driver in it- zooming would be the best word to actually describe the way the other young uniformed man does it. Skidding to a stop behind the group the young man tips his helmet in their direction with the smugest of smile upon his face. "Gentlemen, your limo has arriaved. Got anyone else down the road?"

Harrison nodded, "Owen went out to see if he cound see anyone else still breathing."

Whistling low the driver just shook his head. "Y'all hop in. We'll pick him up and anyone else." Now if you have ever seen anyone cram into a Willie's jeep before you have a general idea of how each man is going to be packed in. With just enough room for Owen and Al when they come upon them.

Well, at least being among his own countrymen is a start. What would Sam do? Probably go along with it.

He steps out toward the road, and the jeep.

Bonzo climbs in, and finds himself in the most cramped vehicle he's been in since the last time he was fighting a war in Europe. And no, that was not in 1918. He does this without any protest...or much comment, for that matter.

Before even the last man can get settled into the jeep it's speeding off again. "Christ, Burt!" Ryan yells out as he is nearly thrown from the jeep, "You tryin to kill us or something?"

All Burt does is give a wicked grin and throws the thing into drive, zooming down the road only slowing down to pick Owen up. Then they are off again - though when Al steps out into view Burt skids the jeep sideways nearly slinging the standing Harrison to the ground. "Hey there, pal. Need a lift?"

Grumbling Ryan leans over to Bonzo, taping him on the helmet to get his attention. "Hey. Kid. Never did catch your name."
