SaDiablo Hall, Dhemlan Kaeleer, Early Sunday Afternoon (Fandom Time)

Sep 12, 2010 04:06

This wasn't a family meeting. It was a war council. Karla had never seen Saetan look quite so grave and even Lucivar had left behind a lot of his customary bluster. They were ensconced in the study, waiting for Morton to arrive. He was past due, though no one was mentioning that.

Though she could see they were all thinking it, especially when they looked at her. )

In the study... hells_highlord September 12 2010, 08:08:27 UTC
For further discussion of what little they know while they wait.

Ben had sat in on his share of war councils (well, one. Where one general held up another general at finger-point. Ben's galaxy was odd), so he'd carefully damped down his nerves as he studied the various faces and tried to look like he belonged.

His eyes kept drifting between Saeten and Lucivar. He knew power when he was standing in the room with it (which was why he wasn't making much eye contact with Jaenelle: no need to escalate tensions inadvertently), even when it wasn't holding the blade Lucivar held in his hands. He would speak when spoken to and learn as much as he could through the conversations around him.

Karla was still very aware of him, even as he was trying to blend into the shadows. She sent a small thread of reassurance at him; Saetan approved of him, if nothing else.

"What do we know, Uncle Saetan?" she asked, while she passed the note to Ben if he wanted to read it.

It said, very simply: Call her home. Meeting set: borders watched, too hard for all to get out. Be there when I can.

Ben read it over and frowned a bit, then listened carefully for Saetan's response.

The talk was going around in circles and Lucivar didn't really have the patience for it. He needed to do something, rather than just waiting for Morton to arrive, going over all of the different reasons the young Warlord might be late.

Most of the reasons he could imagine had him pushing against the killing edge.

In an effort to keep his temper leashed, he caught the eye of the young male that had accompanied Karla to Dhemlan. If he was supposed to trust this male with her, he'd better get to know him, right? He cocked his head towards the door and raised an eyebrow.

It was like a request, really!

Ben nodded and gave Karla a quick smile before heading to the door.

"Hello," he said.

It wasn't the most ingenious opening, but Ben was a little too nervous to care.

"Hello," Lucivar said back, leaning against the far wall of the hallway. He was giving Ben a careful once-over, making no effort to hide his curiosity. "Interesting. I was half-expecting her to bring the male with wings," he said. "Or was that crush one-sided?"

"Warren?" Ben shook his head. "They're together, but I insisted on coming. I have a bit more tactical experience than Warren does."

And for once, Karla hadn't argued with him!

The meeting! glacial_witch September 12 2010, 08:14:37 UTC
Somehow Ben and Morton had managed to miss each other during the various trips to Fandom and to Kaeleer. Surely nothing could go wrong with their first meeting, right?

When Morton finally arrived, he looked exhausted. He'd spent the past days planning instead of sleeping, and even with his strength it'd taken a lot of energy to travel as much as he had.

Still, he tried to stand at attention to give his report right up until Saetan insisted that he sit down like a normal person. So he did that. And explained what was going on.

Before anyone could say anything else, Jaenelle leaned over to give Morton a hug and a quick kiss on his cheek. "Good to see you, brother," she said quietly.

And, just like that, some of the tension in the room eased.

But not all. Oh no, not all.

Screw the tension, Karla was just going to fling herself at her cousin and hold him tightly for a little while. Without even a snide comment about how awful he looked. Because, honestly? He sort of did.

"Hobart's claiming that Karla is dead, and that's why she hasn't been seen in so long. Some people believe him. Some just want to believe him and so go along with it." Morton scowled at that.

"But there are some who have seen enough of what Hobart is to doubt, and I've convinced a small group of the ones I trust the most to meet with you."

"The meeting is set for a little cabin deep in the woods, and I told everyone to be careful and make sure they're not followed."

See? Morton could totally be a spymaster!

"How many and what castes?" Lucivar demanded immediately.

"Seven," Morton answered immediately. "A Warlord Prince, two Princes, and four Warlords."

"There were a few more I might have asked, but I didn't want to bring too many."
