SaDiablo Hall, Dhemlan Kaeleer, Early Sunday Afternoon (Fandom Time)

Sep 12, 2010 04:06

This wasn't a family meeting. It was a war council. Karla had never seen Saetan look quite so grave and even Lucivar had left behind a lot of his customary bluster. They were ensconced in the study, waiting for Morton to arrive. He was past due, though no one was mentioning that.

Though she could see they were all thinking it, especially when they looked at her. )

The talk was going around in circles and Lucivar didn't really have the patience for it. He needed to do something, rather than just waiting for Morton to arrive, going over all of the different reasons the young Warlord might be late.

Most of the reasons he could imagine had him pushing against the killing edge.

In an effort to keep his temper leashed, he caught the eye of the young male that had accompanied Karla to Dhemlan. If he was supposed to trust this male with her, he'd better get to know him, right? He cocked his head towards the door and raised an eyebrow.

It was like a request, really!

Ben nodded and gave Karla a quick smile before heading to the door.

"Hello," he said.

It wasn't the most ingenious opening, but Ben was a little too nervous to care.

"Hello," Lucivar said back, leaning against the far wall of the hallway. He was giving Ben a careful once-over, making no effort to hide his curiosity. "Interesting. I was half-expecting her to bring the male with wings," he said. "Or was that crush one-sided?"

"Warren?" Ben shook his head. "They're together, but I insisted on coming. I have a bit more tactical experience than Warren does."

And for once, Karla hadn't argued with him!

It was a testimony of how grave the situation was that Lucivar didn't jump in and start demanding to know what being 'together' meant, exactly. He did file it away for future interrogation later, however.

"Tactical experience?" he asked, arching a brow. "What kind? You're a warrior then?"

"Since I was nine," Ben said, nodding. "We're called Jedi at home."

Lucivar's expression didn't change, but his psychic scent registered a quick flash of surprise. The Eyrien hunting camps started training young males around that age, but they seemed to be the only ones.

"Not just a warrior, either," he hazarded.

What? He'd seen the way that Ben moved, the ease with which he faded into the background.

Ben's lips quirked up. "We're trained in infiltration and negotiation as well as weaponry," he acknowledged.

"Just what kind of school is the little witch going to?" Lucivar asked the air. "So you know the risks we're running by sending her in there. Just how much do you know about...the political situation in Glacia?" There was a trace of a sneer in Lucivar's tone. He wasn't over-fond of politics. Especially not the kind practiced in Karla's home Territory right now.

"I'm picking up a lot from what Karla doesn't say," Ben replied. "We've had our fair share of, um, insane warlords," sorry, Jacen, "in our recent history at home, and I was on the front lines there. Nothing's going to hurt Karla without getting through me first."

"If it all goes to Hell, it will be your job to get her back here," Lucivar said, blunt as always. "Morton draw the line and defend it to keep them off her back--" assuming he was still on their side, though Lucivar didn't say that, "--but I need to know you can do what's needed. She's going to try to fight you, to go back and try to protect him. Can you leave another man to die and drag Karla home by her hair, if that's what needs doing?"

Ben had been wondering the same thing regarding Morton's delay. "I can," he said, looking straight into Lucivar's eyes. "She can yell at me plenty when she's still alive to do it. I might not have a Jewel in the same way as you all do, but I have power to counter hers."

"She might hate you for it," Lucivar said quietly. "Especially if Morton dies and she could have saved him."

"I'd learn to live with it," Ben said equally softly.

"Not a stranger to difficult questions, are you, boyo?" Lucivar said, with a fair bit of sympathy in his eyes, if not his voice. "You're the one Saetan talked to, aren't you? The one he explained the rules of fussing to?"

He nodded. "I am," Ben replied. "She's also given me a book of Protocol, so I'm learning as quickly as I can."

He didn't mention when he'd had to fuss. He was pretty sure Karla would not appreciate him mentioning a little bit of light stabbing.
