This wasn't a family meeting. It was a war council. Karla had never seen Saetan look quite so grave and even Lucivar had left behind a lot of his customary bluster. They were ensconced in the study, waiting for Morton to arrive. He was past due, though no one was mentioning that.
(
Though she could see they were all thinking it, especially when they looked at her. )

His eyes kept drifting between Saeten and Lucivar. He knew power when he was standing in the room with it (which was why he wasn't making much eye contact with Jaenelle: no need to escalate tensions inadvertently), even when it wasn't holding the blade Lucivar held in his hands. He would speak when spoken to and learn as much as he could through the conversations around him.

"What do we know, Uncle Saetan?" she asked, while she passed the note to Ben if he wanted to read it.

Replacing his glasses, he glanced over to Ben. He'd been impressed with the young male during his last trip to Fandom and was interested in his thoughts. "Have you anything to add to the discussion, boyo?" he asked, curious.

"Hobart's so-called ruling Council seems much the same. As does some of his more...unpleasant tactics for dealing with strong witches. And as Ben said, Hobart is just not that bright."

There was a wordless burst of surprise and concern.

Little Terreille still looked to Terreille for guidance. And that meant they looked to Dorothea and Hekatah, whether anyone knew it or not. Little Terreille, where Jaenelle was sent several times every year. And when she came home, her dreams were wracked with memories her waking mind shied away from acknowledging.
"Intriguing theory," Saetan crooned softly, his eyes a brilliant gold behind his glasses. "One certainly worth looking into."

Which meant that she was always a little unsettled when she was forcibly reminded how dangerous he truly was.
"How?" she asked.

Even Lucivar looked a little disquieted by that.
