Chapter 10

Jack was ready to toss his phone into the bin, followed by all the useless paperwork that Ianto had carefully organized. He was never good at waiting and with Ianto’s life on the line; he was ready to rip the world apart piece by piece with his own hands.

His phone rang; he grabbed at it. “Martha?”

“Jack, he’s on his way. He’ll meet you on the Plas, but Jack there’s something you should kn-”

Jack didn’t answer he just threw the phone down on the desk and ran for the stairs. He’d find out everything he needed to know when he saw the Doctor again.

“Yo! Harkness, where the hell are you going,” Owen asked, getting up from his desk. Tosh and Gwen had hurried over.

“The Doctor is upstairs. You all stay here; I don’t want Torchwood scaring him off.”

“Bollocks to that,” Gwen said.

“Ianto’s important to us too. We’re coming,” Tosh said, running after Jack in her high heels.

Jack wanted to order them to stay but what was the point. They would just disobey him and show up, probably with some stupid excuse about wanting to take a walk to the Quay for chips and walk right into the TARDIS.

He waved them away. “Do whatever you want, just stay out of the way. If any of you do anything to cost me the chance to get Ianto back there, isn’t a place you would be able to hide or enough retcon to forget the damage I will do to you. Shit, look at this place. He’s only been gone a few hours and it’s a fucking mess. You better get this place cleaned up; I won’t have Ianto coming back to this.”

Jack didn’t wait to see if they were coming or not.

He continued racing up the stairs and through the tourist office. Once he got up top, he realized it was daytime. He looked at his watch. It was almost seven am. Ianto should have been at the coffee machine, making the first brew of the day just for the two of them. Instead he was God knew where.

He looked around for the Doctor’s blue box. He couldn’t see it but he could hear the familiar sound, and feel the breeze on his face. He turned and there is was only five feet from him. A perfect landing, something he had never seen before.

The box was barely solid when he started banging on it. “Doctor, open up. We don’t have time to waste.”

The door opened and there was a young redheaded woman wearing a plaid shirt and jeans standing there. “Oi, no reason to shout we can hear, you know?”

“Sorry, it’s very important that I talk to the Doctor.”

“That seems obvious. Well, don’t stand there, come on in.”

Jack walked into the TARDIS. The interior had changed a little, more lights, and glass. It reminded Jack of a modern office building, all glitz and glitter. However, he could still feel her message of peace flowing through his veins. He sent a silent hello to the ship.

“I’m Captain Jack Harkness, and you are?” Jack asked without his usual innuendo attached to the question.

“Amy Pond.”

“Nice to meet you,” Jack said, heading down the ramp to the control consol. There were three people gathered around. He had never known the Doctor to travel with so many companions. He still hadn’t seen the Doctor yet. Perhaps he was in the bowels working on something to help him fine Ianto. “And you are?” he asked the man in a bowtie.

“Jack, it is sooooooo good to see you again,” the man in the tie said, throwing himself into Jack’s arms. “You met Amy, and that sullen bloke over there is Rory. He belongs to Amy.” Jack didn’t return the hug, he was too shocked.

“Hey! Rory Williams, Captain. Nice to meet you.”

Jack waved at the hawk-nosed man. He really wasn’t paying attention, he was too busy staring at the man in front of him. How could this maniac with a bowtie be his Doctor?

A voice like honey said, “Hello again Captain.”

Jack turned to see a very beautiful woman slide out from behind the bowtie man. Her curly hair was tied back with a black scarf. She strutted over to him, pulled him by the lapels of his great coat and laid a big wet kiss on him.

He pushed her gently back. “Ah that’s not what I came for, ma’am.”

“River,” asked bowtie man, “is there something you want to tell me?”

“Spoilers,” River sang.

“Who the hell are you people?” Jack shouted. “What did you do with Martha? Where’s the Doctor?”

“I’m right here,” said the man with the tie. “Martha had to stay behind, some kind of UNIT thing. I didn’t ask frankly I’m getting a little perturbed with them after some of their latest stunts. They seem to be spending too much time involved in the politics of the country instead of protecting it from the bad guys.”

“You can’t be. There is no way the Doctor would wear a stupid tie like that.”

“Bow ties are cool,” he said, turning to look at the rest of his friends. “Right?”

No one answered. “Well, what do you all know anyways? Now, Captain, Martha you had a problem that only I can help with. Martha explained that someone you care about was time-napped. She obviously didn’t tell you I regenerated.”

Now he knew what Martha had wanted to tell him. “I guess she tried to tell me, but I...”

“Just as impatient as ever,” the Doctor said.

Jack snapped. “I don’t have time for this. Here, all I want you to do is to fix this and then you can go.” Jack removed his vortex manipulator; shoving it into the Doctor’s hands. “Once you repair it I can go get my...” What was Ianto? He is so much more than his employee; Ianto was becoming an important part of Jack’s life. Whenever he had any questions about what he should do he often sought out Ianto’s advice. He liked the look when he asked Ianto for help, it was like Christmas and Jack was the best present ever.

“Ianto,” Jack finally said.

“What’s an Ianto?” Amy asked.

“It’s a he, his name is Ianto Jones. He works for Torchwood. He was kidnapped, taken somewhere in time. Someone came and stole him from me. I need to go find him. Time is of importance. I have a good idea who has him and he can be a sick sadistic bastard. Ianto’s in trouble if he had him. I can’t let Ianto pay for my sins.”

The Doctor handed Jack back his wrist strap. “Yes, I remember your-”

“Sweetie, spoilers,” River said.

“Oh, right. I won’t fix this for you, Jack. I have told you before that it would be too big of a temptation. The past is just that the past and I won’t have you going around making a mess of it.”

“Excuse me! If anything happens to Ianto because you won’t fix this I will never forgive you.” Jack wanted to grab the man, rip off that stupid bowtie and shove it down his throat.

“I didn’t say I wouldn’t help you, Captain. I’m sure the dear old girl would be happy to track down your missing Ianto.” The Doctor patted the consol.

“It’s the least she could do. Since she’s partly to blame for my condition,” Jack grumbled. “I’ll go tell my people where I’m going. They weren’t very happy the last time I took off with you, I forgot to leave a note.” He still didn’t think Ianto had forgiven him for taking off with the Doctor. He might have been more forgiving if the Doctor could have fixed his mortality, well lack of mortality problem. He had hoped that if he could become mortal again then he and Ianto could have a chance at a normal life.

“Jack, I don’t think you should come with us.”

“I’m not staying here while you go after my... Ianto. He won’t go with you. Why would he? You’re a stranger. Hell, you’re a stranger to me. How the hell do I even know you’re the Doctor. For all I know you’re another evil timelord with delusions of grandeur, maybe even worse than the Master.”

“Who’s the Master?” Rory asked.

“It’s a story for another time,” the Doctor said. “Jack, I know you’re scared and that you’re not thinking clearly. I can tell that this Ianto Jones of yours means a lot.”

“How the hell can you know that?”

“I have seen you in your future with Mr. Jones. Moreover, you didn’t flirt with Amy and when River kissed you, you almost looked sick. I’ve see you flirt with trees, cats and even a Tillurian priest. I thought she was going to have a heart attack when you wanted to show her your way of finding heaven.”

There were only two other people who would know about Father Precious; Rose and the Doctor.

“Fine, so you’re the Doctor, but why can’t I go with you.”

“I know you and the TARDIS have mended your relationship over the last few years but if you want us to find your Ianto we are going to have to be precise. I don’t want her to be thinking about you when she’s doing her job. I will follow the signal left by the kidnapped and bring him back to you safe and sound. I promise.”

“Bullshit! You can’t be serious? You really expect me to sit here and wait for you to bring Ianto back here. Oh, I don’t think so. I know you, Doctor, one taste of his coffee and you’ll be offering to show him the universe. Or this damn ship of yours will take a shine to him one he starts polishing and refuse to bring him back to Earth. There is no way you are leaving this spot without me.”

The Doctor sighed and started to speak but River cut him off. “Captain, you have to let us do what we can to get your man back. We know the importance of what we are doing?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Spoil-”she said.

“I don’t care if the fucking universe blows up in a fiery ball tell me what you know lady.” Jack pushed River against the railing. “And if you know anything about me you know I mean what I say. I won’t lose Ianto, not a day sooner than I have to.”

“Jack!” The Doctor shouted yanking on his arm; the other two tugging on the other one. “This isn’t helping anyone.”

Jack let go and shook off the Doctor and his companions like annoying insects. He took a few steps, tryingto calm down. These people were his only chance to get to Ianto.

“The only one I want to help is Ianto. Let us go get him. Jack, you have no idea where he is, or what he’s going through,” the Doctor said softly. “It could be nasty.”

Jack felt his heart constrict. “I don’t care; I need to be there for him no matter what, no matter how bad.”

“And you will be. I promise we will pop in get him and be right back.” The Doctor had led Jack to the door. It was open showing him the Plas. It was one of those rare sunny days in Cardiff that made people call in sick.

These were the kind of days he liked to spend outside with Ianto, maybe a picnic, or just walking around not saying anything. Shit, he hadn’t even taken Ianto out for dinner and the movie he had promised him.

If the Doctor couldn’t find him he never would either.

“You promise? No stops, you bring him right here. I don’t care what they have done to him, how bloody or bruised I want to see him,” Jack said, his hand clenching the Doctor’s jacket.

“Yes, we all promise.” The Doctor looked at his companions. They all nodded.

Jack figured they were just trying to humour the nutcase.

“If you don’t, I’ll hunt you down, and I have all the time in the universe to do just that, don’t forget.” Jack started to step out before turning around and facing them all. “I’ll be sitting on that step over there. So unless you want to see a dead man there you had better hurry.”

Jack walked away. He refused to turn back even when he heard the sound of the TARDIS leaving. He was just about to sit down when the noise started again. The ship was back. He couldn’t believe it, they were back. Ianto was back. He jumped up in the air, doing a happy little shuffle. He figured he would have to wait a hell of a lot longer than a minute. He had been prepared to sit there until the end of the world if that’s what it took.

He raced over to the door, and started pounding on it. “Let me in.” There were a few people staring at him but he didn’t care. Ianto was on the other side.

The door opened but as Jack walked into the spaceship, it was obvious no one was there.

“What the hell? Where is everyone? What happened? Where’s Ianto” Jack demanded

The door slammed shut and before Jack could do anything the TARDIS started to move, taking Jack with her.
