Fandom: Torchwood/Doctor Who

Pairings: Jack/Ianto, Ianto/other.

Warning: swearing, M/M kiss

Just a reminder I do not own Torchwood, or Doctor some &%^@(  jerk .... Well, just to let you know I make no money and only intend this for entertainment.  Wooster and Jeeves belongs to PG Wodenhouse.

This story takes place shortly after Meat. I liked the episode but it left a few question for me at the end.

The feedback and comments have been great and feed the muse. I rpomised more tonight and since I'm stuck here at work on a full moon I might as well send it out. Hope you enjoy it.

Chapter 9

Jack helped Ianto back to his feet, then he escorted him to the lounge holding his hand. They sat down on one of the overstuffed chesterfields. Jack wanted to plaster himself against Ianto making sure he was real but thought better against it. He had already been punched once tonight, and that was going to have to be enough proof of life. He let Ianto sit first. He was happy that Ianto chose the middle, so Jack could at least have their hips touch, innocently of course when he sat next to him.

As Jack watched Ianto make himself comfortable he tried to chase away the memories of the last time he had seen his lover. The images of Ianto dying on that dirty floor fighting to say how he felt and then that pub exploding into nothing; it all mixed in a horrible scene. He gave himself a mental shake, he had Ianto sitting next to him, he could forget all about Thames House and The House of the Dead. They were never going to happen to Ianto not now, not ever.

“How are you, Ianto? Are you feeling all right?” Jack asked.

“No, I’m pretty sure I’m anything but all right,” Ianto snapped. “I’m either having the worst nightmare ever or I’ve been kidnapped and dragged into the future. God, that sounds like a bad sci-fi movie. And what’s worse I’m almost naked!” Ianto hopped up when he saw that Jack was staring at the partially opened dressing gown. He pulled the sash tight and started wandering around the room his hands clenching and unclenching. Ianto opened his mouth to speak but shut it with a loud click. Jack could see the anger rising in those gorgeous blue eyes, and the redness in his cheek would have had Jack worried if he wasn’t already an immortal. He could hear a few smatterings of Welsh. He was sure his parentage was being questioned.

Jack couldn’t help himself, he laughed, and the angrier Ianto became the louder he was. He had tears running down his cheeks but for the first time in a long time, they weren’t falling in sorrow.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Ianto demanded, standing over Jack.

“I’ve missed you, and those damn Welsh vowels.” Jack reached out and pulled Ianto onto his lap. He rubbed his face against Ianto’s stubble. He took a deep breath. He hadn’t smelled anything so wonderful in a long time; coffee, lemon polish and sea salt.

“You really are Jack, aren’t you?” Ianto asked wiping away his tears.

“Yeah, I am. Sorry to disappoint you.”

“I’m not disappointed. Well... not exactly, just wondering what’s going on, Jack. It is Jack, still, right?”

“Yeah, well to everyone here and that’s not much more than Wooster and Cook. Anyone else I stick with captain.”

“Wooster? Really, Jack it should have been Jeeves. Did you learn nothing stuck in Wales all those years?”

“Of course I remember. You used to sit up in the tourist office reading those books, but I liked Wooster better. I liked Hugh Laurie even when he went over to do that stupid show in America.”

“You remember that?”

Jack shrugged. “I remember all sorts of strange things. Most of them involve you.”

“Me? Why me? It wasn’t like I was important to you, not like Gwen.”

Jack grabbed onto the back of Ianto’s head and pulled him closer, letting their lips touch. He wanted to take Ianto’s here and now, but only if he wanted to be sitting on his ass again. So, he barely caressed those soft lips. It was just enough to let Ianto know he was real. He wanted to shout for joy when Ianto returned the kiss.

“Oh, Ianto, I would never have brought you here if you weren’t important. You are and always have been the most important person in my long life.”

If Ianto only knew, what his precious Jack Harkness almost did to save him all those years ago. He would have let the 456 take all the children. He would have let that evil creature loose if Ianto would have left that pub with him. Ianto laid his head on Jack’s shoulder.

“You wouldn’t have known it, the way you were acting before I left.”

“What happened before you left?”

Ianto’s blue eyes stared at him. “Why do you want to know?” Ianto ask suspiciously.

“Just interested in what was happening. How everything was going for you.”

“Do you want to know about how I was almost shot in the head two days ago?”

Jack’s heart started to pound, not only because of what Ianto was saying but the anger that was coming out. He couldn’t remember Ianto almost being shot. Something like that he was sure would have burned a hole in his memory.

“The only reason I wasn’t dead was because of a gun misfiring. Those bastards cleaned their guns as often as they did themselves. How about how you made me look like a fool pining away for Gwen when she chose Rhys over you? Did you not bother to check the date before you kidnapped me? How did you know stealing me away wouldn’t change things? We could have been in the middle of something. My sudden disappearance could have gotten someone killed.”

Changing things was exactly what Jack had in mind instead, he said, “It wasn’t me who took you.”

“Sure looked like you.”

“Okay, it was me but it was before Torchwood, before I met the Doctor. Before I was immortal.”

“Are you insane? What if someone had seen you? Or worst yet, you got killed? There were weevils in that alley. Did you think about any of that?”

Jack shrugged. Five minutes talking to Ianto and he felt like a silly schoolboy. Hmmm, he wondered if that was one of the role-plays Ianto liked.

“Concentrate Jack. Now is not the time to go day dreaming about sex.”

“How did you know?”

Ianto raised his eyebrow in his give me a break look. “Not like it’s the first time I’ve seen that look on your face. Now answer my questions.”

“No, I didn’t think about it because I knew it had already happened.”

Ianto slipped off Jack’s lap and flopped his head against the back of the couch. “What are you talking about?”

“I sent a discreet- I can do discreet,” Jack said when Ianto snickered. “I sent out messages to the time agency, saying that if anyone wanted to do some freelance work that there was a man who would make it worth their while.”

“And you, the real... The younger you responded?”

“Yes, about two years ago.” He would explain his missing years another time. He didn’t think Ianto needed more stress and guilt. He knew his lover; Ianto would feel bad that someone had to suffer to get him here. Even if Jack didn’t look at it that way. To him it was destiny.

“It took him that long to find me?”

“It took him that long to end up in a position of authority which would allow him to travel back in time to Earth. Going back to the mother planet was a plum assignment. He had to bribe many people but he was well compensated. Everyone wanted to go and see how it really was on Earth instead of just reading about it in on vid screens.”

“I guess that makes sense, sort of like an archaeologist going back to Roman times but what if he had been killed?”

“Then the universe would implode?”

“Jack, I’m serious, you can’t just go jumping all over history willy-nilly. Even if it wasn’t you, yourself doing it. You’re still responsible for him and any outcomes that could have gone wrong.”

“I don’t give a damn about the universe.”

“Jack!”

“I don’t care, Ianto. What the hell has the universe ever given me? It just keeps taking and taking. It takes all those I love away from me. It took you, Stephen, Alice, Tosh, Owen, Gwen, Rose, and Estelle.  People I’ve never even met and the Doctor. Hell, eventually the whole damn planet Earth will disappear into the sun but I’ll still be going.”

Ianto reached out and caressed Jack’s hair. “I’m sorry, Jack.”

Jack sniffled a little. “Me too, and if it wants to explode, then whole damn galaxy can but I’m not giving you up.”

Ianto put a hand on each side of Jack’s face. They stared deep into each other’s eyes. “Even if I stay, you will have to let me go someday, Jack. I’m not immortal I will die someday.”

“I know but it would be great to have more memories of you.”

“Is that why you’re doing this?”

“I’m doing this because I can’t have your deaths on my hands anymore and stay sane.”
