There are many things that are new to me here. It has been almost a month and they still make no sense. The machines and the language people use are entirely foreign. Alanna was here? I don't know how to feel about that. Disappointed she isn't here anymore, I suppose. I assume she was a warden because it would make no sense for her to be an inmate, even if she is pig-headed and can be brusque. She's a better person than I am. I also hope she was a warden because if she was an inmate for some inconcievable reason that would mean she was dead.

She was a warden. I didn't know her well, but I definitely got the impression that she had a life back home to get back to. Something about a war going on? She was very vocal about her opinion on the lack of discipline around here.

A war? [Both interesting and weird.] She's often very vocal about a lot of things. I'd say it's part of her charm but it's not all that charming.

Oh, and don't worry, I don't intend to let anyone know about your history. As I said, I prefer to keep knowledge to myself. Knowledge is power and power becomes weaker if it's shared.

Ah! I was told you asked for one. It doesn't really make a difference to me, though. The library is quite fascinating! I'm the one that asked her to send you to me, because I think we should get to know each other firstly, and secondly you should be warned to be careful around Ardent, because he is easily offended and carries a weapon.

I don't really want to get to know you but it's not personal; I just don't like people very much. My warden told me I had to work and the library seemed like the most appealing of the options I was given. I'll probably spend most of my time reading rather than helping or directing people to find books because I think they could just as easily find them themselves. I don't much care if that annoys you or the other workers in the library.

Is he likely to attack me? I'd as soon know so I can be prepared for it.

I will bother you to do your fair share. There is no room in my culture for people who will not do their duty.

He values the books highly. If you deface them or destroy any, he may attack you. You will also be fired.

Oh, well in that case there's no need to worry. Defacing or destroying books would probably be the last thing I would do. I value books more than I value most people. I think it comes from my father.

And it's not deliberate--well, mostly--it's just that I've just never particularly had to work before. I come from a noble family and although we are supposed to make a token effort to help, there were always servants and maids and people who did these things for us. Then in the City we were to focus on study.

Yes. The Black God is the brother of the Mithros and the Great Mother and he leads the spirits of the dead to the Peaceful Realms--he rules there. [Pause. He may be honest at the moment, but speaking ill of the gods is still a little risky.] I'm not very devout, despite growing up in the cloisters of the City of the Gods. The gods are very real, but I was always reluctant to give them much respect.

My Gift is magic; sorcery. It got corrupted when I raised my sister's enemy from the dead. I was completely drained when I died and I was hoping it would come back right but it seems that was too much to ask for. It's very inconvenient.

I serve the Many-Faced God. Where do they call him Black? I've never heard that name before.

I can. ...though I had to take my sister's power as well as my own to do it. Theoretically, I could raise anybody. [Not necessarily true? But Thom thinks it is.] As for what I need to fix it... there are spells I need to complete. I hate it but I'm truly unsure I could do it by myself. Particularly if the corruption comes back as strongly as it was before Master Si-cham started helping me fix it.

Oh, and you're probably from a different world than I am. He is known as the Black God in Tortall.
