Yeah... I can see both sides of the arguement here. I think the original gripe was aimed at the vast minority (i believe) of recipients, the ones seen to be bludgers, basicaly the coundn't-be-fucked ones. I too have a problem paying taxes that go to support, in any sense of the term, these deadwood. Stop paying them, and perhaps distribute that money to where it is needed? I know you could do with a bit more support.
IAWTC, and you said it much more politely than I would have.
I've been accused before of being a cog in the machine coz i'm not "sitting on the steps of gov't house protesting". To which I replied that it takes 3 people like me workin our asses off to pay some dope smoking cockring to paint a sign and smell bad in a public place.
When I was unemployed I applied for over 400 jobs. I KNOW people who don't apply for any, and find ways to cheat the system. And I pay over 1/3 of my earnings to support the fuckers.
Gnargh. I'm not even sure what I want to express. I see and understand your point, and I myself resent the "bludgers", if only because they give my father a gold-plated excuse to continue to forward the above bilge to me on a regular basis.
There's more but I'm off to a concert, so I'll get back to this later. :)
When I was unemployed for five years after leaving teaching and my mother dying, I nearly got used to that continuous level of contempt and hatred from almost every stranger I met, however. it was always an unexpected surprise to get it from my friends and relatives.
Why don't people just come out and SAY they hate poor people?
that is so true. better to play make believe that there are armies of dole bludging losers- wait, what were the terms? 'dope smoking cockrings' and 'deadwood'- who are shirking their responsibilities to society blah blah blah.
I have known armies of these people who quietly volunteer for one organisation or another, who take care of others without blowing their trumpets, who struggle to raise families on nowhere near enough money but who are considered 'bludgers' because they won't put their kids into fulltime care for the bliss of paying everything they earn for that fulltime care. It goes on and on and on.
I agree with so many of the comments made in this thread regarding double standards.
But hang on...GST. Good and Services Tax. We *all* pay that one. And in fact, if you're on a benefit or pension, a greater proportion of your income goes on tax than it does for a person on a higher income.
There are plenty of stupid people who I would happily pay to keep out of the workforce. Having known people who were too inept to do things like wash their hands after using the can, or who had a "she'll be right" attitude to workplace health and safety, I think there is a small, select few who best serve society by being inert consumers, idly re-eddying the taxmoney they get among honest, hardworking publicans, pornographers and cottage industry pharmacutical representatives

I so love this reply- I can think of people that I would love to add to the list of 'please stay home'. :D
Imagine if being a fully fledged member of society meant having to pass a competancy test first...
