Fanon to Canon 'ugly naked guy'?

Feb 26, 2012 05:32

Writing something for Credence, this thought occurred to me. As I'm sure most anyone knows, there are quite a few things that were said or stated in QAF fandom / showtime message boards by fans that inadvertently made it onto the show in one way or another ( Read more... )

This was on the show. I have the vid where Justin mentions the 'naked guy painting' as it goes out the door. It's the same episode where Justin finds out that Brian is the 'Concerned Citizens For The Truth'. It's in episode 314. You can see it here:

Thanks you. I know it was on the show, what I'm asking is, if anyone recalls if that is one of the phrases or things fandomers said before it aired on the show.

Such as a conversation I had on a qafshow messenger board with a few writers wherin my name under my username it said aka: brianknockupsunshine as a joke and then we had conversation about it. This happened in season 4, I remember specifically because it all started with me cracking about Justin wearing pink was not only because of the pink posse but because it was a sign that he was pregnant with a girl and that was really the reason he became a gun toting lunatic, because all preggers people get crazy with their homes LOL! HORMONES hahaha. And that fighting with Brian was not good for the baby and boy would Brian be sorry when he found out he hit his 'baby's dada'. This was a total joke of course that became more and more ( ... )

If I recall correctly, Justin also refers to it in season one when he gives Daphne "the tour". He says something like: "Wait til you see the picture of the naked guy."

Ah yes, he does! I'd forgotten that. I will have to watch because I'm wondering if fandom made the remark that referred to it as 'the ugly' naked guy painting first, but that might not have been so much as fanon fact to canon fact as it was just blatant truthful observation.

Glad you understood what I was asking for about this stuff as I guess i may not have explained it well enough.

*goes to watch that scene*

Glad I could be of help. I didn't know that some of these things kind of came from fandom as I've only been in the fandom for little more than a year now.

I only remember this scene so well because right then, they have Brian and the stratigically positioned plant make an appearance ;) And because I always keep thinking: "I can't imagine Brian going to a gallery picking out that painting." Ha, maybe it was one of Lindsay's early works, now that I'm thinking of it...

Ha, maybe it was one of Lindsay's early works *dies laughing*

CPR--- Okay so that has to be one of the funniest things ever because if that had once been fanon whoops I mean canon, Lindsay would be a VERY famous artiste as that painting had to be worth something if Brian was selling it and was recouping a good sum of money to pay off some of the 'suddenly acquired bills within a week's time' at 'that time of the month'. Come now, that painting may be of an ugly guy, but it isn't THAT bad! Think for a moment about that horrible Sam Auerbach thing Lindsay did. NOW THAT is not only an UGLY naked guy but an UGLY painting I am convinced they had a juvenile artist do all of 'Lindsay's work' whom was paid with the nubs of pencils and used paint tubes that 'Justin's artist' had thrown away ( ... )

What newer fans can't comprehend is how PASSIONATELY every single detail of each episode of QAF was scrutinized and hotly debated. ad infinitum, in the intervals between episodes. Thus "minor" details such as messed-up timelines and outright errors became huge issues to us rabid fans. Watching QAF as it unfolded each week was, necessarily, a much more intense experience.

It's my opinion that the show, when watched in its entirety at one go, makes a viewer more tolerant of gaffes and lapses in characterization. An example of that is the difference in how fans accepted season 5. Original fans, watching in "real time," were mostly outraged, furious, absolutely LIVID about the ending. Newer fans seem to be more accepting and tolerant of the ending, and of CowLip.

I completely agree, it does appear that way. Though I have, with much time and the certainty of Brian and Justin's love I have come to accept 513 and even love watching the ending. But that may also be because in my head and on paper I've developed countless scenarios of their continued lives and that highlights the everlasting love they share.

CowLip, I don't know that I'll ever accept them. I have accepted what is queer as folk, and what I have to 'work with', if you know what I mean, but I still don't and never will accept so many of the issues I have with them.

I'm still trying to recover from a virus so I'm limited on how much time I have to read before my eyes cross, but I had to respond to this. I am a new QAF fan who practically watched the five seasons in one sitting and I was "LIVID" about the last episode. I was so upset I took to my bed in tears, cursing the day I started watching the first episode. I will say that I am more tolerant about time-lines but only because I watched the episodes once and sped through non-bj parts (sooo not interested in seeing the other characters being intimate). I could have cared less about the inconsistency of the time lapses.

Now the inconsistency of the characters, I noticed right away. I know Justin was bashed, so I gave some leeway to that, but the episode where he leaves Brian after he gets syphilis for whoring around and then the later episode where he tries to force a trick on Brian at his bachelor party almost gave me whiplash. WTF???

Yes, I know for sure that one was because as soon as the episode aired with Ben, someone referred to him as that while we watched and talked on a message board.

I know there was quite other things, quite a few in season 3 I think. But besides "Zen Ben" and "knocked up sunshine" I can't think of any others right this minute, it was quite some time ago. I'll probably think of more if I watch the series, that's usually when it comes to me.
