I have wondered ths often myself. Why is it the bad stuff that gets stuck? Why can I only write poetry about pain? Why does the negative seem like the meal and the positive the rewarding dessert? I figure, most of the head-scratchers that human behavior offers us can probably be chalked up to evolution and survival, somehow or other. Life is rough when you aren't exactly domesticated, so it's the hard experiences that imprint on us so we'll avoid then in future and thus live longer. Unfortunately, as with so many atavistic programs our forebears bequeathed us, once we created Civilization, the survival techniques we needed in the trees, and then in the caves, didn't go away. But then, we haven't had Civilization really all that long. We still have wisdom teeth, baby toes, appendices, too, all holdovers from humanity's dawning. But they're evolving away. In another million years, humans won't have those things. And if we really work at making our world and our lives better, safer, healthier, I suspect the oh-shit reflex will evolve

thank you. Thank you for being there in the midst of my crazy and thank you for being here in cyber where you make me laugh out loud and remember why I love you so.
You are the rawkinist most excellent wonderful friend and I thank the Universe for you every day, I do.
Stop beating yourself up for feeling negative, that's more negativitiy. You feel the way you feel, and it will change.
I'm sorry for the panic attack-I had something similar two weeks ago, where I managed to convince myself that I was minutes away from a heart attack-no, I'm fine, but it sure shook me up. I talked myself down, and realized thatI have the power to change my life and I am/will. Big *Hug

Unhappiness is a cultural thingclarsaFebruary 20 2009, 18:38:18 UTC
I agree with ic789. There are happy ghosts. But just like we don't pay much attention to our own happy circumstances/blessings, we don't pay attention to the happy ghosts. Occasionally we notice that a certain place feels calm and uplifting and full of beauty. But it doesn't occur to us to question what happened there that caused it. Bad stuff? Yeah, we want the back-story. "Boy meets girl and they live happily ever after." Boring. We want a story with some tragedy, some struggle, a villain!
Why? Fix-it mentality. It is not that way all over the world. I've traveled a lot. Some cultures are much more open to being in the moment, being aware of the good that is right now. But Americans are driven to root out all wrongs, discomforts, injustices, and FIX THEM! And we must not be happy until everything is PERFECT! Our unhappiness shows that we care and motivates us to act. Not true, but such a pervasive attitude in our society, we buy into it
