So my summer school class went well tonight. I have thirteeen students, but only twelve showed. I figure at least one will drop. I only kept them an hour and a half of the two hours, tonight.  They all seem like a good bunch; we'll see. Tonight, in addition to doing my standard "scare off the lazy ones" speech, we did my "15 minute rough draft " ( Read more... )

Mmmm, chocolate cake. :)
Gas here is still over $4 a gallon. I'm lucky that I live only six blocks from my office.
Pride on Sunday - I'd imagine that most people who have a problem with that wouldn't be going to Pride anyway.

There are several affirming churches that usually have booths, that may not be there. Plus, I wonder if they will get "flack" from the religious community for having it on the holy day.

Yes I guess it is a problem. New York City always has the Pride Parade on Sunday and there are lots of floats from churches and religious organizations.

What's the 15 minute rough draft exercise?

It is basically a free writing excercise. I have them free write whatever is going through their minds for five minutes to generate ideas, then they read over what they wrote and circle any word or phrase that they think they could use as a possible topic. Next, they choose one of the things they circled. Then they do a five minute focused free writing on only that subject. Then I have them revise the piece for five minutes. Fifteen minutes and they have a focused piece of writing on a singular subject in need of more revision-- a rough draft. It really helps with the "blank screen syndrome" where they sit at a blank screen forever trying to get started. It also shows them the benefits of getting it all out before trying to "fix" it.

You know I grew up mere minutes from Franklin Tennessee, right? I'm sure you guys will have a great time at Pride, it's the company not the day.

No, I didn't know that. How cool! I know we'll have fun. We always do regardless of what we do.
