CultBox: 'Atlantis' set visit reportThere’s no denying the commitment, and the money, the BBC have invested in the show. The sprawling warehouse that is home to the sets and production base is so big that some members of the crew navigate it on Segways and bicycles. And there’s secrecy too. We’re forbidden even from tweeting that we’re here.

Excuse me for taking a 'cynical' viewpoint but this is all very familiar isn't it? They said the same things about each subsequent series of Merlin. 'Bigger, Darker, Better'! I am curious to watch the show but I really can't see myself getting excited over it like Doctor Who and Merlin.

Productionwise there probably is very few difference between filming Merlin and Atlantis, thus many questions about filming the show (CGI work for example) will be answered the same way. Still, so far the majority of what we've heard or seen about/from the show has a very distinct Merlin feel to it (not a surprise since apart from the main cast the old Merlin crew is working on it).

I'm curious how Atlantis will be a 'very different show from Merlin'.

The phrase it’s the tone of season five of Merlin jumped out and managed to make my blood run cold.

I do hope their "painful lessons" include telling a coherent and logical story.

Oooh, but I've figured out the ending: Atlantis is drowning, Jason gets rescued by the submarine, wakes up to discover its all been a bad dream, and his father is there and its Patrick Duffy!!! (Oh, and Pythagorus is there too, and his dad is Art Garfunkel)

Hahahahaha! Oh, I well remember "The Man from Atlantis". I'll look it up again and dig up my old VHS tapes of it. :)

I just can't understand how this is supposed to be "very different from Merlin" and yet EVERYTHING we've seen so far of it screams Merlin rip off. Screams, not just reminds of. Even the 'spoiler' is in a way ripped off of Merlin's finale.

Head cynic here. My apologies.

Exactly! There is No originality been shown here. It's EXACTLY the same!!!!
One of the things they were guilty of was reusing the same scenes and plots over and over again, and they're still doing it!
They're making it way too easy to be cynical (and also way too easy to be taking cheap shots as well)

The only reason I kept watching Merlin was because I HOPED that S1 was going to repeat itself: I wouldn't have bothered otherwise sparing myself the awful heartaches that we received as the series progressed.
They shall be so lucky to have such a badass S1 as Merlin did.

Off topic: there's going to be a Dracula screening at the New York Comic Con on the 12th (x)
Sharing cause I just saw one link on Tumblr but didn't find anything on Twitter yet :/

Yeah, I saw that at the NYCC site. I just don't think it's overly exciting when there won't be a Q&A with cast/crew and the show'll premiere in a month on TV.

They're doing a shitty promotion so far (cast-like); I don't know how NBC usually handles new show, but so far I'm not impressed XD

The more I read about this, the less interested I become. May this show sink like Atlantis...

I guess they'll do well enough for not to sink just after one season (BBC and BBCWorldwide spent a lot of money on it, they've built massive sets and I'm pretty sure the show'll be renewed for a second season even if they won't reach the ratings Merlin did) but so far I've seen nothing that really makes me want to watch the show. Too many similarities to Merlin and although they seem convinced it'll be very different from Merlin I have no idea how they'll achieve that.

This sentence alone: "That being said, both are also keen to reassure us that Atlantis won’t just be Merlin in sandals" makes me wanna scream YES, YES IT WILL BE.

So...no love from me ;)
