'Atlantis' set visit reportThere’s no denying the commitment, and the money, the BBC have invested in the show. The sprawling warehouse that is home to the sets and production base is so big that some members of the crew navigate it on Segways and bicycles. And there’s secrecy too. We’re forbidden even from tweeting that we’re here.

What Merlin brought to me was an innocent happiness - all too rare in TV drama these days, so I have been wondering why S5 was it so hard for the fans but the actors liked it. I have concluded that while S5 may well still have been fun for the actors - I am sure they had lots of laughter behind the scenes - but this time we were not party to it. I have been looking at the Merlin Keep stills and there is virtually no smiling in S5 compared with the early Merlin series. Grimaces or sardonic ones yes, but not the sort of open genuine smiling that makes the audience feel good. Both Bradley and Colin, given the chance have wonderful life enhancing open smiles.
Though we have been joking about the similarities (even the cliffs are on the right of the shot! as in the 'his father's son' Jason v. big baddy!) there is one clear difference already. Both Bradley and Colin physically are not just handsome men who photograph exceedingly well but both have wide set eyes so both naturally trigger that subliminal reaction to a small child's wide eyed gaze.
The two Js talk about 'wide eyed' innocence again but physically neither actors immediately has that appeal in the stills we have seen to date. Last time I think the casting director was a woman but I may be wrong. This time I wonder who did the casting, and if once we see them acting, they can create that particular subliminal appeal that makes you want to take them to your hearts. Starting at an S5 level of grimness just won't do it for me!
