Ruki was listening to the crickets humming their annoying yet comforting song. The air smelt of lemons, olives and the salt of the sea; completely clean and in a way intoxicating. The perfect night for things, no matter what things, to happen and the blonde knew something was going to happen. Very, very soon.

He was sitting on the bench in front of the apartment he had rented or was he really sitting? No ... his head was resting on Reita’s thigh, the bassist’s fingers entangled in his blonde hair.

How they had ended up like this he didn’t know, but he wasn’t about to complain; this was just too comfortable and so he curled up further like a lazy cat might have.

“Taka?“ Reita’s voice was soft and so it didn’t quite disturb the peace of the night or at least not enough to get Ruki to open his eyes.

“Hmmm?“

“When are we going to go back?“

The first eye opened slowly, revealing a crystal blue contact lens. “I’ve told you I won’t go back.“

At least now now ... But Reita didn’t need to know about that, Ruki was going to keep his plans to himself for a while and just enjoy what he could get at the moment.

“But ... what about the band?“

Ruki knew he wouldn’t be able to pretend for much longer, considering the fact that this band was his dream, his life even. No one would believe in his words if he told them he was going to sacrifice all of this for a shabby apartment in the middle of nowhere.

“What about Kouyou and you?“

Reita tensed at this and the second eye opened as well, looking up at the bassist without even a hint of mercy. “Yes, Aki, what about him? Do you think he’ll be happy and buy us a cake or what?“

“We aren’t together anymore.“

Those words whispered between them in the early hours of the morning we’re fading had to be the harshest words Reita had ever heard. It was the fact that Uruha didn’t seem to fight at all, not even with himself, he simply accepted things the way they came and didn’t try to stop them from happening.

Ruki sat up fully now, not touching Reita anymore; they had lost this brief moment of contact and comfort in favour of yet another argument, it seemed.

“You let Kouyou go? Because of me ?“

Reita rubbed the bridge of his nose, desperately trying to gain time, time to think of a good answer because he somehow felt Ruki wouldn’t let him get away with a ‘yes‘ or a kiss this time.

“No one expected me to go and look for you, Taka. I did it because I wanted to and we ... we were having a fight about it. Or at least as much of a fight as you can have with Kouyou. It was then that I realised that he could never give me what you are giving me. Taka, I ... need you.“

Reita hoped this would be accepted, this one explanation he could offer, this only thing he knew. He had no second plan. Maybe because he had never had a first plan to begin with; what he was saying was the truth, not more, not less. If Ruki couldn’t accept it, then there was absolutely nothing he could do about it.

He would have to return to Japan without the other, telling the management that he had failed, that they would have to look for another vocalist. But could they really do that? They had come all the way to where they were with Ruki and there was no way to replace him, this stupid, crazy, over emotional man who he had fallen in love with without ever realsing it until it was too late.

At the same time Ruki was more or less lost in memories of the past, their friendship and how everything had led to where they were now, unable to escape. He knew they would have to make a decision, it was now or never, but he just couldn’t bring himself to say or do anything.

Finally he looked back up to where Reita was sitting and nodded slowly. But of course he wouldn’t have been Ruki if he had simply accepted the explanation given to him.

“And how do I know you won’t just get infatuated with someone else while you’re with me?“

This was it then.

Reita’s next answer would decide over everything and yet ... Ruki wanted to give in, no matter what the other said. This was what he had been dreaming of, this man all for himself. Why was it then that now he didn’t feel very happy or content at all?

“I can’t promise you anything,“ Reita replied softly. “You’ll just have to trust me.“

Ruki looked at the other for a long time, for a very long time actually, but finally he nodded and the biggest smile he had ever given to anyone spread all over his face, curling his lips, digging those tiny, tiny creases into the corners of his eyes and his cheeks.

“I guess that’s good enough.“

There they sat, two best friends united in peace finally, but with so much more going on between them, it was hard to really make a move now.

Ruki felt incredibly tired suddenly with the first rush of adrenaline gone and everything settled as far as these things could be settled, he really didn’t think he could keep his eyes open for much longer.
He stretched, enjoying the comfort of hearing and feelings his bones crack slightly, and almost purred.

“I don’t know about you, Aki, but I’m going to bed now.“

Something about the way Ruki looked at him told him this wasn’t an invitation for anything, that what had happened before wouldn’t be a part of whatever relationship they were about to throw themselves into, and at the same time he knew Ruki was daring him to do what he knew he wanted to.

“I’ll go for a walk,“ Reita replied. “I guess I need to think about ... everything. Yes. I’ll be back.“

And so he walked down the long, steep path to the ocean, leaving Ruki alone to think about whatever the vocalist needed to think about and rendered himself to his own emotions.

Little did he know that his departure had been watched and little did he know of the wide, innocent eyes that were now burning with the fire of fury.
