Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Interlude Chapter 6 At first Reita didn’t know what to say or think or do.
He could feel the numbness running through his body until it had even reached the tips of his fingers, creating this tingling feeling in them, which usually indicated they had ‘fallen asleep‘.
This was all just wrong. All of it. He had never wanted it to be like this and never imagined it could actually happen. In the matter of only a couple of hours his life had gone from at least somewhat normal to a mess he had no idea how to get out of.
He just wanted to close his eyes and fall asleep, leaving all the complicated things in the world behind.
However, he did know that he had fucked up and that he needed to correct this.
The bassist left the house and the garden, making sure to lock the gate behind himself, before he turned and looked around. Ruki only had two places to go: up the hill or down.
Reita didn’t need to think twice and he stormed down towards the cliffs and the ocean, the wind ruffling his hair like a lover caressing him.
From manga and anime Ruki knew that emotional breakdowns were usually accompanied by the gasps and giggles of school girls, but that logic failed to work for him as he sat on that goddamn rock in that goddamn country, crying his goddamn eyes out.
He couldn’t even tell where those tears came from; perhaps because from what had happened with Reita before, maybe because he was physically and emotionally exhausted or ... well, there was Kouyou, Uruha ... whoever that was.
Uruha -for some reason thinking of his friend as Uruha made it a little easier- had always been the ‘perfect‘ one in their group for some reason and Ruki had always been insanely jealous of the blonde, not that he’d ever let that on, but it was still true.
Reita and the blonde had always shared some kind of special bond, one that Ruki couldn’t exactly see because they were no different towards each other than they were towards him, but one that was there and he didn’t like the feeling of it at all.
There were these other memories, too. Memories of girls, who had attached themselves to Reita and Uruha, leaving him on his own. Kind of like now or oh wait- he was wasn’t alone.
He hadn’t heard the other’s steps but he knew that Reita was right behind him anyway. Otherwise the little hairs on the back of his neck wouldn’t have stood erect like they were doing now.
Ruki wouldn’t turn around, though; as long as he wasn’t facing Reita, as long as he was just looking at the blue, blue sea he could pretend that he was alone with his jealousy and overflowing feelings. He wouldn’t have to face reality and deal with whatever Reita had to tell him.
He didn’t want to listen to any apologies.
Apologies would mean that he had really been hurt and that was something he was desperately trying to forget at the moment, no need to remind him of this again. He just didn’t want to hear it but this was Ruki’s life and it didn’t necessarily mean that he got what he wanted.
“I’m sorry, Taka.“
Since Ruki didn’t try to scratch his eyes out or anything he took that as a sign of momentary peace and sat down beside the other; just that he didn’t let his legs hang over the cliffs, that was a little bit too much.
“Did I ask you to sit down there?“ Ruki finally replied tartly. “I wanna be alone.“
Hearing Ruki say what he wanted didn’t happen very often. He made it clear enough with his other actions usually and Reita now knew if he hadn’t known before already that he had fucked up.
“I’m sorry,“ he repeated. “You ... I never wanted it to be like this.“
“Well, now it is so.“
How very helpful ...
“I don’t know what to do, Taka. I’m bad with these things. Please ... help me?“
He hadn’t made his voice break on purpose, you probably had to be a very good actor to be able to do such a thing and that wasn’t what Reita was. He was simply a man who was at a loss, who couldn’t go on and couldn’t move back, who was stuck in a place he didn’t want to be and saw no way to get out of the situation he was currently in.
He expected Ruki to just tell him to go to hell but to his surprise the short blonde wrapped an arm around his shoulders instead. For minutes they looked down at the ocean together; Reita almost thought Ruki wouldn’t talk to him again when he heard his best friend’s voice again in a way he had never heard it before.
“I can’t even help myself.“
Reita’s arm found its way around Ruki’s waist almost on its own and there they sat with the sun burning on their heads and the sound of the waves soothing their ears.
