Dec 11, 2011 10:23

Title: My Sacrifice
Author: gatechic
Characters/Pairing: A bunch of people - I'm too lazy to list. This will be centered around Azkadellia and Garrett eventually.
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Post-series. After the events of Bad Company. The Zone is in disarray with fractions forming across the land. Will DG and the Cains be able to save the Zone from another war or will brother fight brother? One will make the ultimate sacrifice, one will get revenge, and one will heal.
Word Count: 1,254
Disclaimer: Tin Man characters belong to the SciFi Channel, RHI, Steven Long Mitchell and Craig W. Van Sickle. But Travis, Isabelle and Garrett belong to me. I also borrow from L. Frank Baum, Gregory Maguire and Rachel R Cosgrove (Payes). This is purely for fun and I'm not making a penny off of this.
A/N: This is a WIP and full of OCs. Written for the Big Damn Prompt Table. My table, complete with the finished icons, is here. Yes, I do intend on finishing the other fics, but my muse writes what he wants to write.

Joanna paced around the room with heave footsteps. James watched her for a moment and wondered how times she paced the small island. His head lowered at the thought of her trapped in that small globe while he walked in relative freedom and waited for their angel to return.

He raised his head. “Joanna, please, you’re going to wear out the floor.”

She stopped and turned to look at him. “I can’t help it, it’s a habit…”

He stood and crossed the floor. Reaching out, he took her hands in his. “Listen, no matter where we go she’s going to have unpleasant memories: The Tower, Finaqua, the Northern Palace, it won’t matter, my love. Winter is almost here, let’s go to the Northern Palace. We can ice skate, have snowball fights, sit by the fireplace and drink hot cocoa, paint ornaments for the Lurlinemas tree, watch the Northern Lights dance across the sky…”

The Queen sighed. “But that is where…”

James tightened his hold on her hands. “She needs to remember the fun times and trying to keep her from our home won’t help her.”

“The people are angry, if they know we are leaving this place they will try to kill her.”

“Then we need to make plans, gather a protection detail we can trust,” he said as he brushed the side of her face with the back of his hand.

She covered his hand with hers. “Who can we trust?”

“Well, there are some Resistance Fighters like the Cains.”

She shook her head. “No, we can’t, they’ve done enough already.”

While they talked, they didn’t notice they were no longer alone. “Garrett Cain. I don’t trust anyone but him.”

James and Joanna turned at the sound of the voice. “Azkadellia, dear,” Joanna started but was interrupted by her daughter.

“No one else, mother. It must be him.”

“Azkadellia…”

Azkadellia raised her hand to stop her father. “You will never understand why it must be him.” James stared at her for a moment before shifting his gaze to his wife. “She’s stubborn.”

“Wonder where she gets that from?”

Granted

Wyatt wasn’t sure if he heard the news right. “She wants who?”

“Mister Garrett,” DG said and pursed her lips waiting the inevitable growl of disapproval.

“She’s crazy…” before he could stop himself, the word was out of his mouth, and he regretted it when he saw the look on her face. “Sorry, DG,” he said with sincerity; “but she can’t be serious. He’s not trained for this sort of thing.”

She knew what he meant but it still hurt, and still reminded her of the guilt she’s been carrying. “She won’t leave unless he’s in her protection detail. He’s the only she trusts, Mister Cain.”

Wyatt scratched the back of his neck, and a moment later shook his head. “No, I won’t ask him. She’s going to have to trust someone else.” Granted, he wasn’t sure how many men would even consider volunteering for the job.

“You don’t have a choice, Mister Cain, my mother has already sent a messenger to him.”

Envelope

After the messenger left, Garrett started to read the letter he pulled out of the envelope. He sat on the chair with a heavy thump. His heart raced and his throat closed so tight that barely any air went into his lungs. He sat motionless while his mind tried to sort out his thoughts. How could Azkadellia request me to be her escort? Wyatt has the experience. I’m just a cattle rancher.

Protect her at all costs, another voice said.

“Why me?”

From the father, life will given to the lands from two shoots; one comes while the moons are high and the other, while the suns meet in the sky.
One shall shine brightly as if in the heavens and the other will bring summer to the winter across the land.

To darkness, one be drawn when winter shall enfold.
Then, when the river flows, thawing the ice, birth renews like spring.
One shall return and give wisdom and knowledge on the coil that defeats the beast. The Father of the South will come, and from him, renewing days shall rise up from snow-covered lands.

Garrett’s brows furrowed in confusion. “What does that mean? What does that have to do with me?”

Protect her at all costs.

“I can’t…”

I can give you what rightfully belongs to you.

Garrett stiffened at the sound of the other voice. He pressed his fingers to his temples and squeezed his eyes shut to fight off the voice. “No, go away, leave me alone.”

“I’m sorry, Garrett.”

That voice wasn’t inside his head. He turned and saw Becky standing in the middle of the great room. She started to leave when he jumped from the chair. “No, Becky, I didn’t mean you.” He walked towards her carefully, not wanting to scare her. “I’m sorry, darlin’, I was just thinkin’ out loud.”

She turned to face him. Her eyes shifted to the space closing between them. Her body wanted to react, wanted to start shaking and her mind was preparing for the inevitable. When his hand touched her shoulder, she looked up into his face, into his eyes. “Garrett,” she said softly, and with shaky hands touched his chest, “love me. Chase them from my memories. Save me.”

He lifted a hand to cup her face. “I will always love you, take care of you, and I’ll save you as often as you need.” He leaned forward until their lips touched.

Rock (stone)

The Separatists met at the home of Ian Logan for another meeting. Ian lived in one of the smaller Quadling towns of Stoneswash. The town was located near the border of Munchkin Country, in the southernmost territory of Quadling Country, near the river called Muck of Silver, which ran through the valley of Wild Hills. All year round, the grass was a bright green and crops grew plentiful. Some of the residents of Stoneswash were of mixed heritage, with some claiming a Quadling heritage, while others claimed a Munchkin heritage. The culture, food, music, and celebrations were a mix of the two nationalities with the Munchkin influences coming from the Southern Guild, and that often meant long and colorful festivals.

During this time of year, when the winds changed and came from the north, Stoneswash was one of the last Quadling towns to feel the change of seasons, and the townsfolk often felt far removed from the rest of the Zone. It was a perfect breeding ground for the Separatists movement, and Ian was well aware of this fact. If he wanted to find support, it would be in his own backyard.

Ian looked out over the crowd gathering in his barn. It certainly fed his ego to have so many people attend to hear his plans for a better Quadling Country. He noticed Garrett sitting in the back, looking lost as usual. Whatever happened to him during the past fifteen-annuals certainly had an affect on him. In his mind, Garrett Cain was nuttier than a headcase. He wasn’t sure how Garrett still found a way to sway people’s mind when his own mind wasn’t quite working on all cylinders. Ian also saw Aiden, and when their eyes connected, Ian motioned towards Garrett. Ian watched Aiden turn to look and then turn back with a nod. An accomplished smile appeared on Ian’s face. Things were about to change and Ian didn’t know the role he would play in that change.
