I Guess Freedom is Selective, These Days

Nov 02, 2004 22:45

The ban on gay marriage just passed in Kentucky. 75% of voters opted to violate the civil and human rights of people they they don't even know, people who have never done anything wrong. I wish I had something to say. I feel physically ill ( Read more... )

i couldnt believe it either. im too depressed to puncuate. i really thought even bible thumping asshole fundies would understand they cant force their narrowminded views on everyone and could just live the way they want. i thought theyd understand that all people have the right to visit their children, to see loved ones in the hospital, to adobt, to recieve insurance coverage when faced with the death of their life partener. all of them passed.

i don't even want to live here anymore.

Well, they're rejoicing and shouting to their tyrrant god now, saying that they have 'saved our society'.

i don't even want to live here anymore.

I don't even know what to type here, because everything I want to say, I want to say to the people who voted against it.

It bothers me So much, not only because of what you mentioned about church and state (which I completely agree with), but also because it does shed a bad light on people with a certain faith. I grew up Baptist and it's still a big part of my life. But it's my view, and I don't ever want to impose that on someone else, especially when it restricts their life in such a hideous way.

The irrational, emotional part of me wants to go to the house of every single person who voted that in and ask them face to face why?

It does-- it makes it worse when certain people of that faith get on TV and celebrate the violation of human rights.

I was raised Baptist, as well-- my mother is still Baptist, and she voted against the ban in her state. So I know that not all are bad... it's nice to hear support from you, though. ^_^

If only we could do that-- put a face to the people they're hurting so. If they couldn't look us in the eye, then maybe...

And it's fortunate that you had that knowledge beforehand. It's just really sad, because there are a lot of people who haven't had the previous positive exposure, and end up looking down on the faith as a whole (I have a good friend like this).

put a face to the people they're hurting so

Exactly. Some CNN reporter was saying he'd heard a lot of personal, emotional, and political reasons why people voted the bans in, but he had yet to hear a single logical and sound reason why gay marriage is a bad thing.

I'm ready to spit nails. I wake up this morning and that's the first thing that I see. Holy freaking...*rubs head and tries to calm down* I know that you're angry enough about this, and hurt too. I know several people personally that are going to be hurt a great deal over this--one of them is in one of my classes. We were discussing this and hoping aganist all hope that some people would have the decency to do the right thing and think outside of their tiny little box. No, of course not. This is Utah. There was no hope from the beginning, but I feel better just because I did vote NO on it passing. Damn it, this isn't fair and isn't right and I'm so pissed off that something like this could get passed. Can't it get overturned, if enough people protest and do something about it? It's taking away the rights of people that have done nothing wrong. They aren't harming anything. The other thing that they are doing is harming somebody's sensibilities. Good grief, people! Get over it! Yes, it may offend you, but if you don't like it, look the ( ... )

I saw it last night, so I went to bed angry and woke up feeling fatalistic about it. I just.. feel so powerless. I've had flashes of anger during the day, but I'm really just overwhelmingly hopeless and sad. You could fit my faith in humanity inside a thimble and still have plenty of room left over, right now.

Oh, but Laz, there are big, bad lesbians outside that box! ^_~

They can take it to the courts, but a lot of groups are sayingt they won't, because the state supreme courts will probably hand down the same decisions. I know people in Oregon are going to protest-- they're hopeful it can be overturned, since it won by such a thin margin there.

They aren't ( ... )
