9th Case: UN MOMENT, S'IL VOUS PLAIT // [video]

[The Guide turns on to its regularly scheduled programme of Koala Town Children's Time, and today it's the Valentine's Day special! The show starts with the customary introduction sequence, with happy puppets dancing around the screen in time to the opening song. All is fine and dandy, until the actual live recording starts up-- it's all downhill from there.

The camera focuses on one puppet, center-stage, shaped like an elephant-mouse hybrid. There's a long stretch of silence wherein the puppet stays completely still, before there's a tentative little shake and a deadpan voice starts reading the script:]

Good evening, kids. Today, we're going to talk about something very fun and exciting: Valentine's day.

[A pause, and a HEAVY SIGH. The puppet stops moving again, and to all of those who are familiar with Holmes' voice, you might have caught on to the fact that yes, Holmes is the one who's moving and voicing the puppet.]

Do you know what Valentine's day is?

[A deliberate pause where he waits for the prerecorded 'NOOOO' to answer him... and by this point he's just getting fed up with this, so he decides to toss the script and do his own rendition:]

It's a day that I decidedly don't want to deal with, involving the historical practice of Saintly martyrdom by numerous Saints by the name of Valentine. Why exactly we attribute romance and affection to this holiday is beyond me.

[And suddenly, Holmes stands up behind the stage, propping the puppet up on the makeshift theater wall, and walks off-camera.]

Food for thought.
