I'm always happy to learn new things, as I did today, and refresh the memory of things learned in the past. You've saved me from also planting garlic and asparagus together, thank you very, very much! I found some garlic in my kitchen that was sprouting and too far gone to be worth saving this winter and planted it, because why not? I didn't think it'd make it, but it's doing quite well. It's right next to where I was planning to plant asparagus this spring. Now I'm planning on moving the garlic to the base of my peach tree before I start my asparagus.
Hmm. Not heard about the stunting effect of garlic. It is tempting to use the borders of the asparagus bed for a catch-crop. Alas, in my garden I have grown leeks and garlic just about everywhere for years and they developed the dreaded rust and neck rot. This stays in the soil for years so I cannot grown them now. I tried garlic in large pots, very well draining soil, all the precautions and help I could think to give . . . but they got neck rot. Shop garlic is never the same as fresh.
