PSA: asparagus, garlic, plum curculio

Apr 09, 2016 19:48

This afternoon, after the most recent round of ephemeral snow melted away, I went out and dug a whole tub of baby garlic out of the asparagus bed.

It's there because of an error a few years back.  At the time, it seemed logical to plant the garlic next to the asparagus.  It was only later that I read about garlic stunting asparagus growth.  Personal experience implies that it REALLY stunts asparagus growth.
And, since I'd let the garlic become feral, it is now everywhere in the bed, and very hard to completely remove.

So, let my error be a warning to others:  keep asparagus and garlic separated.

I hope to start a another asparagus bed somewhere eventually - IMO, one can't have too much asparagus.
And I'm fine with plenty of garlic in the rest of the yard.

What I've been doing with the dug-up garlic is re-planting it under the plum trees.
This is based on a comment in the Fedco Trees catalog, implying that garlic might help deter plum curculio.
It's a simple enough thing to do, so I'm happy to give it a try.
