The little ones will send out roots if there's soil underneath them, or they'll be fine hanging on the stems. No place to plant them outside? You can snap a couple off and plant them anywhere. Mine are looking really happy and we had snow last week. And the rabbits didn't find them this winter. I used to have a flock of them that was growing mostly over concrete.
mama has the succulents like that planted in a large shallow clay container (like a drip pan for a very large clay pot). i dont think its over 2 inches deep, and they're very happy in there.
you can detatch the babies or leave them there, either way they'll be fine.
What's already been said. Also, no hurry. These are slow growers. If they start looking unhappy, re-pot them. On the other hand, if you want a big dish garden of Hens-and-Chicks right away, you can go ahead and put them into their new home now and they'll get busy filling it in. They're not fussy about soil type, although they do need very good drainage, and they want to go thoroughly dry between waterings.
When these are mature, they'll flower if they're getting enough light, and the flowers are very cool: rather star-shaped, and the flower stalks and blossoms look like they must have inspired the set designers for Star Trek TOS. Oh. and if they aren't getting enough light, you'll get weak growth, very spindly and or stretched-out looking.
