cacti in Wisconsin

I got these cacti in late summer. I've got well-draining soil. Can anyone give me an idea of how much water they need? Since I put them in, I've been giving them a good soak every four days. Less often, now that it's getting cool. Is that too much? How much water should they get next year? And finally, what about winter conditions? They'll probably ( Read more... )

I thought maybe they'd need a little more water until they got established. Most plants do. I'll let up.

Any guess about winter water needs?

Are you going to dig them up for the fall/winter? I've never heard of cacti above zone 7.

They're all rated to zone 5. They're good. Forgot to mention I also have a prickly pear and a dwarf agave, but I'm not as worried about those.

I think I would faint over dead if I saw a cactus in my neck of the woods (northern Indiana). I never would have guessed they were hardy this far north! :)

I would suggest keeping them dry this winter. They can endure cold dry winters over cold wet ones.
That is what normally kills them over the winter.I have a potted one I keep in a sheltered spot to keep it drier in the winter in my zone 7 area.

I don't think they'll get much snow in that spot over the winter. Good to know. Thanks!

I've hardly been to the desert, but I know how cold it gets there. And I've seen pictures of snow on saguaro.

I've got a tiny saguaro in a pot, and I think it may be dead. My instructions were to give it a tablespoon of water every month. I've done that, but I'm not sure if it's still alive.
