Garlic scapes?

I have no idea what garlic scapes look like. I've noticed something on the garlic that don't look like the other leaves, but I don't know that they're scapes either. I figure I should find out for sure, because I guess I'm supposed to cut them... or not... I still haven't figured that out yet. So any advice there? Are those scapes, and if not, ( Read more... )

yep those are scapes

cut them off and sautee them, they're yummy (a little milder than garlic!)

Yes, those are scapes. You can remove them to keep the bulb growing a bit longer. They're tasty - just snap them off near the base, take them inside, wash them, trim the flower bulb and the woody ends, then sautee them in a bit of olive oil and garlic. You can add them to other veggies, throw them in with some pasta, or casserole, or make garlic scape pesto. Lots of recipes out there.

"trim the flower bulb"??? Wait a sec... isn't that the best part??

'course, I never heard 'em called "scapes"... we just call 'em "garlic whistles"

As the others have said, they're yummy. Being a lazy gardener, I only cut off the ones I'm going to eat, and I've never noticed a difference in the size of the bulbs between those where I cut the scapes off, and those that I haven't.

I'd never heard of that - either growing or eating them. I was thinking they look like my daffodils when they're getting ready to bloom. And I just cut some buds like this off my ornamental onions.
