Garlic scapes?

I have no idea what garlic scapes look like. I've noticed something on the garlic that don't look like the other leaves, but I don't know that they're scapes either. I figure I should find out for sure, because I guess I'm supposed to cut them... or not... I still haven't figured that out yet. So any advice there? Are those scapes, and if not, why do they look like that, and what do real scapes look like? And should scapes be cut off or not?















(This one hasn't curled over yet but you can see it starting to grow from the middle...)
