This!! nicely done. The only thing I do differently, is with herbaceous perennials like mums which die back to the ground after frost, is that after all sign of life is gone, I cut them down to the ground, and then mulch. The part I cut off gets composted.
What I tend to do with them is carefully protect the ones I've like the most. Then in the spring when they start to resprout, I dig up and divide some, transplant to pots and move them out of the way, being careful to water regulatly. Then in late summer I transplant them back in the garden. This way I can plant annuals in that spot for spring and summer color.
Your irises will die back over winter. I live in zone 7 and they just show a little green during winter. You might want to go to http://www.schreinersgardens.com and see what they say. I buy my irises there every year. Don't put mulch too close to the base of your tree. It attracts rodents that will eat it and kill it.

Don't put mulch too close to the base of your tree. It attracts rodents that will eat it and kill it.
