This!! nicely done.
The only thing I do differently, is with herbaceous perennials like mums which die back to the ground after frost, is that after all sign of life is gone, I cut them down to the ground, and then mulch. The part I cut off gets composted.

What I tend to do with them is carefully protect the ones I've like the most. Then in the spring when they start to resprout, I dig up and divide some, transplant to pots and move them out of the way, being careful to water regulatly. Then in late summer I transplant them back in the garden. This way I can plant annuals in that spot for spring and summer color.

Your irises will die back over winter. I live in zone 7 and they just show a little green during winter. You might want to go to http://www.schreinersgardens.com and see what they say. I buy my irises there every year.
Don't put mulch too close to the base of your tree. It attracts rodents that will eat it and kill it.
