Hello! I have a question about making a garden ready for winter.

I've never had a garden before, so I'm not sure what to do with it for winter (if anything). I've got summery plants that are looking less and less healthy as it gets colder here. Should I let them die naturally? Pull them up? Cut them down?

There are also mums there from last fall which are blooming, however many of them were knocked down during bad summer storms when small tree limbs fell on them. Their "branches" are laying on the ground in the flower bed, but still blooming. They just look kind of pitiful. Should I do anything about them?

Also, I planted irises rhizomes in early summer/late spring. They've all shot up the green "leaves" of an iris. Should I do anything for them for winter? Do they need mulch? Cutting off the leaves?

We also planted a tree in June I believe. It's leaves shriveled up in the July heat in spite of watering plenty, then in August it sprouted new leaves, so I guess it's still alive and doing ok. Should we put mulch around it too?

And what can I do about my potted summer plants? I have a geranium and a periwinkle, both of which look pretty sad now. Should I pull them out and throw them away?

Thanks in advance for any advice, I really have no idea what to do for this!
