Four day weekend!

Apr 02, 2015 19:37

We're on the edge of a four day weekend woohoo! I believe in some countries it's only a three day weekend which is terrible - is that the case for any of the non-UK types amongst my friends ( Read more... )

That sounds like a well planned weekend, especially the cake of awesomness :) Not much planned at all, we were going to eat ostrich for Easter - er, not an entire bird, I picked up some frozen ostrich steaks at Iceland and they seemed a suitable alternative to the roast which we weren't having anyway (nobody can face cooking a big meal just now) but given mum's under the weather with a bad tooth i suspect we shall remain ostrich-less for the forseeable future as she's not going to want to be chewing even tender steaks, ho hum. I may do some painting however..

I set aside a whole day for the cake baking, just in case...

One of my exes got some ostrich steaks once and tried to convince me to try some. I can't even remember if I actually ate some but I know that I just couldn't face the thought of it so I doubt it.

Did you get any painting done?

Good planning on the cake-available time there..

Oh? Put off by the thought of eating something a bit odd or felt sorry for the poor bird due to early love of Rod Hull's best friend?

No, sadly, got very little done other than a couple of sketches from the 50 things to draw book

Well, with my history of baking, it seemed wise. Something always seems to not work out as it's expected to!

Rod Hull had an emu not an ostrich! Bernie Clifton had an ostrich :P I think it was a case of eating something odd as well as not being able to separate the meat from the bird. I can't bring myself to eat duck either for that reason.

Sketching is good though, it's not like you didn't get any arty stuff done at all. Did I mention that I got a copy of the 642 things to draw book with some money I got for my birthday? I have yet to make a start on it though...

Enjoy the long weekend :)

Did you wear your party dress and get a party bag with a bit of birthday cake in a paper serviette to take home?

None of the above. Birthday parties aren't what they once were :p

This is so true. What's a birthday party without a game of pass the parcel?

We only get the Monday off, here. Not the Friday. That's unfair! *pouts*

Aww! *patpat* There's a weird mix of which country gets what dates. Germany has both the Friday and the Monday, but Belgium only has the Monday same as you. I don't understand it, it's not like the Friday doesn't have any religious significance.

According to wikipedia, the Friday is a holiday for countries with a protestant tradition. France is rather catholic. However there is some exceptions even in France, some of the DOM-TOM (the lands we have overseas) get the Friday off, as do the Alsace and Moselle regions (they kept being invaded by Germany and France, so they gained a special status, with privileges, due to their semi-german identity. Probably to keep them happy ;) ).

It seems catholics consider that the resurrection is much more important than the death of Jesus. It may be a valid point of view, but since the protestants got TWO days off and not just one, the protestant point of view seems kinda interesting too. ;)

However, we get August 15 off. Do you?
Wikipedia says that in some villages with a mixed population, the catholic farmers were annoying the protestant ones by working in front of the church on Easter's Friday, while the protestant guys were doing the same on August 15. They knew how to have fun !!!

That all seems rather topsy-turvy. Germany has a strong Catholic tradition and they have the Friday and Monday so that doesn't seem to go with what Wikipedia said. And the fact that the Friday is supposed to be a fast day for Catholics, you'd think that would make it a holiday. Considering that Catholics are seen as being more strict in their observance than Protestants, it seems bizarre that they'd get only one day holiday!

I had to check what was happening on August 15! No, we don't get that as a holiday. The UK has very few bank holidays actually, just 8: New Year's Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day (Dec 26), Good Friday, Easter Monday, May Day, Spring Bank Holiday (used to be Whit Monday) and August Bank Holiday (a random day that has no history to it as such). It's St George's Day tomorrow and that's not even a holiday here although there have been petitions and campaigns for it to be recognised as one.
