Ah, no links this week, folks. I go back to school tomorrow, and I'm using the day to prepare and reacquaint myself with my courses (after having ignored them all week).

Just a quick fic-related note, though:

- I am working on a Robin/Spike slash fic (cause...it must be done). I'm a fangirl of both characters, but having read some past Read more... )

Just to muddy the waters further, my understanding is that race issues for Brits play out differently than for Americans, so that's another wrinkle to consider. Aren't I helpful?

They do. But seeing as Buffy is an American TV show, I think it's safe to use that lens of looking at the racial dynamics.

Indeed, although the ep "Pangs" might give you a way into Spike's worldview.

Ah, I don't really need help on the Spike side of things. I want to make sure my white privilege doesn't cause me to do a disservice to Robin in any way.

I'm afraid I'm not versed enough in issues faced by African-Americans to be much help. But if you want someone to rant for hours about how Inca Mummy Girl is total immigration!Fail, I'm your girl :)

I may misremember some details since I really don't want to rewatch that episode, but the subtext I got was this...

Woman from south of the border enters the US by unorthodox methods. To survive, she drains the livelihood lives of good hardworking Americans. She then enters a relationship with a white American boy but ultimately exploits him so she doesn't have to be deported deteriorate into a mummy. She's finally challenged by authorities Buffy and returned to her proper place.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but as an immigrant I felt the subtext clobbering me with a clue-by-four. And this episode is from Season 1, when the show's metaphors were laid on pretty thick.

What do you think?

I can see that now that you lay it out. Interesting.

May I recommend what, in my option, is a good post featuring a few intro pointers on writing characters of color?

Just in case you end up not finding anyone to help you with a read through?

Some of it you may not find useful at all, and the tone is very candid, but I think it may be a good starting point...

Thank you muchly. I'm not getting any bites, so it looks like I'm just gonna have to try my best on my own. :)

I've read Zvi's stuff before, and her tone doesn't bother me at all. I appreciate the pointer as I hadn't thought of looking up that post. :)

Oh, and thank you for "going there". I'm often a bit more tentative than I should be in talking about race cause I'm a big cowardly coward, but I do appreciate it being brought up. Especially as race in the Buffyverse is so wonky. *sigh*

Your very welcome. I made it a habit in college to go there, but it's a separate minefield over the net, so while I will go there, I'll tread lightly.

Mostly cause internet RaceWank is not a pretty sight.
