I certainly would choose the bottom scenario. I despise when other people have the ability to ruin my day with their clomping around, music playing, children screaming, etc, that I had in every apartment I ever lived in. Plus, I like planting a garden in my yard, having a shed with my tools, putting a swing on my front porch, etc.
I know you've made posts before about a more efficient use of resources by cramming people together, but that isn't a pleasant life for some people. We could also try having less children, so that our biggest goal in life isn't to increase our land density.
Hey there. Birthrate actually increases in lower densities and decreases in higher. The answer to the population problem is really to stop subsidizing sprawl - even small towns stabilize in population when they are dense, like little European towns.
OMG - I think I'm going to have to add you! Love your post pointing out that civilisation is actually all about - gasp - cities! It's really refreshing to see a poster that actually thinks that people matter

Hmm, I probably wouldn't pick either. I've lived in a very packed environment for most of my life, and I'd like to get out and buy a ranch or an open space somewhere.
Your picture of low density is actually what we would consider pretty high density here in the Cleveland Ohio area. Many communities were requiring a minimum lot size of three four and five acres for a single house, especially out in places like Russell township. They wanted only very big single family houses on very big lot sizes. If the city grows, it's pretty hard to fill in land that is settled like that and it's pretty hard to make housing affordable as well. If you are ever in the Cleveland area again, go out to Chagrin Falls. Everything around Chagrin Falls is wealthy except for a section of Chagrin Falls where the city of Chagrin Falls annexed around the development and gave the land to Bainbridge Township
