Don't follow ATLA so can I get a brief explanation?

I love the fights that we are getting, at least I didn't get -_- like I did when Szayel fight was on. Kubo seemed to do better when it comes to Shinigami people, perhaps because the diversity existed there within the divisions, rather than individualistic approach to fighting principles. Then again, they are vastly different worlds that couldn't be compared at all.
