Mandolin Woes

First of all, the book of classical mandolin music is way, way above my current ability. Maybe I'll be able to work my way through it in a couple of years, but for now I'm going to have to stick to the St. John's freshman chorus manual ( Read more... )

What are the tuning pegs like? Usually humidity makes them sticker than normal (if they're wooden), but they can get slippery over the years -- if you have some chalk, I'd suggest putting it on the tuning pegs to help them stick a bit better, in case that's part of the problem.

This mandolin is about a year old. I wouldn't expect the tuning pegs to be having problems like that so fast, but I'll give it a shot. We don't have any chalk, but I'm sure we could buy some.

I ordered new strings and they're on their way now. I don't like the style of mandolin I have anyways -- it's an A-style (round body) -- and would prefer to try out the F-style, which might not be quite as difficult to balance on my lap.

Actually, it's not so much a problem with the tuning pegs as it is the nature of the beast; even brand-new tuning pegs tend to be a bit slippy. *shrug* Just the way they are, so far as I know.
