Nick lay there, unmoving except for the faint rise and fall of his chest.

Julian swallowed thickly and pulled a chair toward the bed, sitting on the very edge of it to be as close to Nick as possible as he brushed his fingers over the back of his hand. "Please, Nick... you can't go, too."

His hand twitched slightly under Julian's touch and then went still again.

Julian's breath caught at that tiny movement, hope flickering through him as he thought Nick would wake, and dying so quickly it left the boy feeling suddenly very cold. He sniffled softly and bowed his head, letting his forehead rest on the bed. "Please... please be okay..."

Julian held Nick's hand in both of his, leaning forward to press his lips to the other boy's fingers as tears slipped down his cheeks. "Please be okay... I need you," he whispered helplessly.

At that, Nicolas' eyes fluttered open. Rosaline rushed out of the room, calling out, "I'll go get a nurse!"

"Nick!" Julian sobbed, and stood to touch the other boy's face softly. He was certain he had never been more happy to see those eyes looking up at him, and the only thing that kept him from launching himself at Nicolas' chest was the fear that he might hurt him.

"...Hurts," Nick murmured through chapped lips.

Julian glanced toward the door, then sighed softly. "When Rosie gets back with the nurse, we'll get her to give you more painkillers. It'll be okay, just hang on a little longer."

"Don't leave me," Nick whispered, half-delirious, "Please?"

"Shh, I'd never leave you. I'll be right here, holding your hand the whole time," Julian murmured soothingly. "You don't have to worry."

"I love you," Nicolas murmured weakly.

Julian swallowed thickly and looked up at Rosaline. "He's... he's lucky to even be alive. The car must have been going really fast..."

Rosaline sighed heavily and stared down at her hands. "But he'll be okay, right?"

"I don't know, Rosie... From all this, it sounds pretty-" he stopped when he came to the second sheet of paper, the words dying on his tongue.

"What, what is it?," Rosaline asked frantically.

"Here, here it is," Winry said frantically, skidding to a stop outside of Nicolas' room. She glanced at Ed, her eyes already filled with tears, then pushed the door open and hurried inside.

By the time his parents arrived, Nick was fully awake. "Hey, Mom," he said roughly.

"Oh, Nick," Winry breathed, moving to the bed to take his hand. She leaned over him to kiss his forehead, then shook her head. "My poor baby..."

Ed swallowed thickly and asked, "How are you feeling?"

"Like crap," Nick answered.
