"Here, here it is," Winry said frantically, skidding to a stop outside of Nicolas' room. She glanced at Ed, her eyes already filled with tears, then pushed the door open and hurried inside.

By the time his parents arrived, Nick was fully awake. "Hey, Mom," he said roughly.

"Oh, Nick," Winry breathed, moving to the bed to take his hand. She leaned over him to kiss his forehead, then shook her head. "My poor baby..."

Ed swallowed thickly and asked, "How are you feeling?"

"Like crap," Nick answered.

Julian's fingers were tight around the hand he hadn't let go of since he'd first gotten to the hospital, and he sniffled softly.

"Are they taking good care of you?" Winry asked, brushing Nick's hair back. "Do you need anything?"

"I..." Nicolas turned to Julian and looked at him pleadingly. "Did you tell them?"

Julian squeezed Nick's hand and looked up at him. "Do you want me to?"

"Tell us what?" Winry asked, looking between the two as a feeling of dread settled over her. "What is it?"

"I-I can't," Nick said quietly, "You do it..."

"It's okay," Julian said softly, and then turned to look up at Winry. "He... in the accident, his back.... it's... b-broken,"

Winry's hand flew to her mouth, and she shook her head. "No..."

Ed stepped forward and laid his hands on Winry's shoulders, to make sure she didn't fall. "Will he be able to-"
