Julian was curled up against Nick's side, the two of them laying haphazardly in the treehouse that was quickly becoming too small for both of them. In the back of his mind he realized it was a good thing they had gotten this close, and were able to lay close together

"I'll try," he whispered. "Nick... Nick said he'd take care of me... And I'll have Dad, but... I'll miss you."

Izumi lay there, her chest rising and falling slightly as she labored to breath. "Call for your father," she said weakly.

Julian sat up and looked down at Izumi worriedly. "Mom? Are you okay?"

Izumi smiled up at him wanly. "Just call for him, please."

"Of course I will." Hohenheim said, squeezing her hand. "I'll take good care of him."

Izumi sighed heavily and coughed, flecks of blood staining her lips.

Hohenheim pulled his handkerchief from his pocket and wiped the blood from her mouth. "Izumi..."

"I'm sorry I'll leave you a widower twice over," she rasped.

Julian rushed forward and grabbed her hand. "Mom, I don't want you to go." He said. "I haven't gotten to be with you for long and I don't want you to go."

Hohenheim swallowed thickly and put his arm around his son, amazed at how his own feelings were mirrored so perfectly.

"I know, I know," she whispered, "I'm sorry..."

Julian shook his head and buried his face in Izumi's shoulder. "Being strong is too hard. I don't think I can do it."

"Yes, you can," she said, "I know you can. You won't be alone."

Hohenheim looked into Izumi's eyes and smiled weakly, his thumb trailing over her cheek as he looked down at her, everything he needed to say in that look and touch.

Julian pulled back to look at Izumi and held her hand tightly in both of his, somehow managing to keep his tears at bay, though his chin quivered as he watched her face.

Izumi sighed one last time and closed her eyes, her grip on Julian's hand going slack.

"Daddy," Julian whispered, his voice breaking as he stared at Izumi.

"Shh, it's okay," Hohenheim said, pulling the boy into his arms and holding him tightly. "She's not in pain anymore, and she got to say goodbye to us." He whispered, petting Julian's hair as he wrapped his arms around Hohenheim's waist. "We'll.... we'll be okay, son."

Later, Julian was standing on the porch of Ed and Winry's house, and he knocked lightly, hoping desperately that it would be Nick who answered so he wouldn't have to explain.

Fortunately, it was Nick who was the first to answer the door. "Hey, Jules," he said, "What're you doing here?"

Julian swallowed thickly and walked forward to rest his head on Nicolas' shoulder, his hands gripping the front of his shirt. "Can we go to your room?"

"...What's the matter?," he whispered, pulling Julian into the house.
