On the other: I refuse to 'accept' any of that crap, but that doesn't really stop other people from applying it to my life. I don't consider myself a hardcore feminist, either, though I think I should be - and that's because of a mixture of factors. It's partly because modern feminism is so fragmented and impenetrable difficult for someone not already familiar with all the issues and the factions to understand and participate in, and partly because mainstream society is doing its damndest to pretend that all civil rights battles are over and won and those of us still not satisfied are just whiners and attention seekers. Never mind that this is completely unsupported by the hard facts - if you're a feminist, you must only be in it because you hate men and want to give women special preference in everything. It's the same problem going on with queer rights, too - because the fact that you're (probably) not going to get fired anymore if you come out of the ( ... )

Uh, yeah... the position of the US has frequently upset me in those rankings. And the really sad thing is that, the last time I looked (so for the 2009 info, I think?), it was 12 spaces LOWER - at 31. Right behind Uzbekistan. I believe 2010 was the first time the US broke into the top 20. And yeah... it is beyond depressing. Perhaps more depressing is the fact that 19 is something to be impressed with, comparatively speaking.
