Random Thoughts + BSG Poll

Finally caught an episode of FNL, and it's the season finale! Luckily the DVDs are coming out soon. So, Coach Taylor = Coriolanus, Y/N? ;)

Also rewatched the premier of Farscape. I'm still a bit iffy on the series as a whole, especially John, who seems a bit bland, if very nice and VERY easy on the eyes. But I do believe that Officer Aeryn Sun ( Read more... )

I classify "Islanded in a Stream of Stars" as the actual ending of BSG in my mind. It ends with that shot of Tigh and Adama. "Daybreak" is the epilogue, the other bookend to the miniseries.

I'm satisfied over all with the ending, although there is stuff I can critique. And I do make the arguement that the first half of the series (Seasons 1 and 2) was much stronger than the latter half (Seasons 3 and 4).

Besides the finale gave us kick-ass centurion fights and I really see nothing wrong with that so that can totally stay.

That's my problem; every time I want to draw a line and say "okay, it ends here," there's always something great that I'm leaving out. Even certain scenes in the finale were good. So I don't know. SIGH.

I picked Resurrection Ship Part II, although actually my first choice would've been Resurrection Ship Part I (but that wasn't on t he list). Because RS Part I, while not perfect, was significantly better than the whimpering final part of that 3 part arc. The disadvantage means going out on a cliffhanger, though. I guess I'm just unwilling to let go of the show until the very last moment before it started sucking ( ... )

RSI is much better than RSII, I agree. RSII has some great moments, but having Gina escape and kill Cain right after Adama called off the assassination was pretty weak. And I didn't care for that heavy-handed speech at the end that basically told us the opposite of what we'd been shown in an effort to seem even-handed (kind of like Adama's speech at the end of Razor.)

I guess I'm just unwilling to let go of the show until the very last moment before it started sucking.

I hear you! I'm even worse; I hate the thought of giving up certain scenes even right into Daybreak, so I may have to vote for "accept the finale but fanwanking like a crazy person," IDK.

That said, I would likely keep in Flight of the Phoenix and The Final Cut, though I might switch their airing order around.*nod nod* Your reasoning is quite elegant. :) I agree; sending the armada after Sharon doesn't make a lot of sense, and ( ... )

Ok, so this is difficult, because I do love a lot of what they were going for in 4.0(I thought). Even if the writing wasn't as tight as in earlier seasons, it's still what finally pushed me over into becoming fannishly attached to the show. So I would keep through Revelations for sure, and probably Sometimes a Great Notion too, despite how much I want Dee to continue to live. Because it ends with them starting up the search all over again and more broken, but, yeah, then I could pretend that all of the mytharc and Cylon stuff was actually going somewhere and not fell guilty for having defended any of it. :(

I know it's hard, that's why I haven't voted yet. ;) And yeah, Season One - mid Season Two was the best in terms of tight, consistent writing. But the highs of later seasons were really high.

I don't think I could personally end it at Sometimes A Great Notion, because (1)Dee, (2)DEE, (3) Dammit Ron, DEE. Not even a favorite character, but he's all bragging it up on the podcast about how he kept Sam around because the fans didn't like it and we're not the boss of him, and what the hell Dee, Cally and Tory?!?! *ahem* But also it's the episode where we found out that BawwDama wasn't just a one-episode thing but the rest of our lives. ;) And they broke Laura and picked a ridiculous way to let CKR film his new show and it's just such a downer. I think if I picked Revelations, I would shut the tape ( ... )

Ugh, this is why I can't listen to those and keep my sanity.

But if SaGN was the last we saw of Adama, I'd be ok with that. He continues his breakdown, and then we're done. Works for me. :) I don't even mind them breaking Laura here, because it makes complete sense that this would be what does it for her. In both cases, Laura especially, the things I hate come from the continuing fail in later episodes, not necessarily what they set up here. Plus we'd get the Final Cylon crap out of the way (and stay dead) and end on a vaguely hopeful, but probably doomed note of them getting their shit a little bit together and starting the next futile quest. But, yeah, Dee. We'd still lose Dee. *ponders*

I have to agree with beccatoria about keeping the info from No Exit, it worked really well for me. Hmm, if I'm being cooly logical though, I' ( ... )

...stick with John in Farscape. I think maybe he's so bland in the beginning partly because he's supposed to be our entry POV into this alien place.

Yes, this. (I came over here to say that and you beat me to it... though I haven't finished season one yet, so now I'm watching with the rewatch group, woohoo!)

And Aeryn is so seriously kickass she'd be worth watching even if the rest of it sucked.
This too! :D

I am fairly certain you know why I picked "something else I'll say in the comments."

But in all seriousness, even without crazy fan projects because I have the same problem as you - I love even some scenes in the finale - I wasn't sure how to choose between Revelations and Islanded in a Stream of Stars.

My actual wholesale cutoff point is Sometimes a Great Notion. Kara and Laura's simultaneous funeral pyres are too awesome to cut and I like the despair and weirdness of the episode. Although if it's my wholesale cutoff point I guess I might cut Random!Ellen.

BUT, I also totally accept No Exit.

And I accept the general arc although I reject the mind-numbing horror of certain character-arc decisions (*cough*Laura/Nicky/Liam*cough*) pretty much through Islanded in a Stream of Stars.

So really it's SaGN + No Exit. Plus some stuff.

But if I had to pick from that list and that list alone, I'd pick Revelations.

ETA: Re: Farscape - I'm sure you've heard this a million times but don't judge John's blandness until season ( ... )

*starts humming You're The Inspiration* You're my hero for even attempting this project, regardless of how it turns out.

True. And I actually really liked No Exit, except for the coma; I can see ending it there, minus that. :D

Yup. For everything if 4.5 I want to cut, there's something I want to keep, and for everything I want to keep, there's a dead/retconned baby or Adama/Roslin badness or Epic Manpain I'd like to skip. It's a conundrum. ;)

. Although she threatened to spear out the "one eye [someone] had left," once, so I suppose that might fill our quota of violent threats against disabled persons?

She has a SPEAR?? :swoons:

And THAT TOTALLY COUNTS. I bet she would airlock a baby, too! :):)

Sadly no, she does not have a spear; she uses the word as a verb. At the time she has a knife. But she is threatening to "spear" his eye while holding said knife like two inches away from said eye so it's still kind of awesome.

And yes. She WOULD totally airlock a baby. In fact, I am now kind of dissapointed the show never gave her that opportunity. SO CLOSE, SHOW. SO CLOSE.

Re: BSG. Thanks - I do hope it turns out cool too though. The project is entirely the fault of the show for failing to provide a good cutoff point, obvs. I have done my best to keep the manpain to a minimum, however, I must confess that I left in the Adama painting scene of hilarity. The technical reason being I'm trying to actually make it play a little like an episode and it's kind of a crucial moment in Adama/Galactica's storyline, but the truthful reason being it makes me laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh. And there's only so much retconning of Adama's ridiculous character I feel I can do in good conscience before he's getting more ( ... )

Hm, I said Revelations since that's kind of the last point before the train of 4.5 gets going down the tracks. I would however hate to lose a lot of the stuff after that (lose someone to watch over me? *sob*), it's only ONE EVENT IN PARTICULAR I would like to pretend didn't happen.

But otoh, I also very nearly put fanwank finale, which is probably more true, because in my head, the finale is the finale, canon is canon, and anything else is still classified as AU in my brain. So. *dithers*

Oh, I know, I love Someone To Watch Over Me! Actually, that might be as good an ending place as any. *nods* Kara gets a little bit of closure, and we can sort of fill in the rest.

I'm the same way about the finale - not because I feel particularly wedded to it; I'm more of the "it's all fiction anyway" school of thought, so I have no problem saying that the last two seasons of Buffy were fanfic, etc. The problem is I like certain things about the finale; the ideas, minus the retarded techno-phobia and the lame mythological resolution; it's the execution that was bad bad bad.

It's so hard!
