Author's Note behind cut.
I didn't think this episode did justice to the origins of Excalibur.
Merlin: Gwen, I need a mystical sword that the future king of England shall wield.
A sword born of magic, one that shall become the stuff of legend.
Gwen: Ooh, let me have a rummage around under my bed.
I was also a bit disappointed that we didn't see any Arthur/Excalibur interaction (but I'm hoping that's because they're saving all that for a kick ass episode later on). Anyway, here's my 100 words on the matter.
~~~
Arthur is woken by a song in steel. His pounding head tells of too much ale last night, though he did not touch a drop.
A metallic keening reverberates throughout his body. It thrums in the back of his throat, his chest, his soul.
At the window, he sees Uther fighting below, and for a moment Arthur thinks he wields fire. Then he sees. It is naught but a sword, naught but a sword.
The song has a voice he realises, and it speaks one word.
Arthur, Arthur, Arthur…
I’m coming, he replies without words, and runs toward the call.
