Tonight I'm angry, but in a funny way

Things I Don't Understand Today:

1. Collecting dolls, or action figures, or whatever you call them. Regardless of what you call them, what do you do with them? Why do you have them? It's like a coin collection to me. Or any collection, really. All collections of non-functional objects are seen in my brain in the same way: money I could have ( Read more... )

sports, rhetoric, srsly

1. speaking as collecting-inclined person, i think this is somewhat ocd-related despite it not applying to you. obsessing over some object of interest & compulsion to collect. i've never collected dolls, but i do have almost all of the halloween simpsons figures released through burger king. they just sit there and look cool, once a year.

2. i've never seen either movie. i've seen bits and pieces of the gene wilder since it's so pop culture, but never the whole thing. and i don't know about the rest, but i hate the oompa-loompa song. it's quite disturbing.

3. i'm too mellow, see-both-sides-of-things, sadly. still though i have to wonder if he's going to be living with betty white, telling stories about how nepean is so much cooler than st. olaf, and doing commercials for fixodent.

I think you are probably right. If I had begun to collect the Simpsons figures, I probably would also have them all, btw.

I saw parts of it as a kid, and I watched the new one all the way through, and it was no less terrifying as an adult than it was as a kid. CRAZY DRUG TRIP MUCH?

I really, REALLY hope that last vision comes true. BEST SITCOM EVER.

1. Collecting things is definitely psychological in a way more complex than I could even begin to parse at 8 AM. As a child I was really into collecting things...but they obviously had 0 value...like rocks, or knickknacks. It gave me something to do...go looking for mini statuettes, arranging them on my dresser, looking at them.

2. I love the Wilder movie and that commercial still drives me absolutely bonkers.

3. Ummm...FL is where everyone goes to retire, right? So it's like he's retiring but getting paid to retire. And work. Sorry.

I take it back. I DID collect things as a kid. I really, REALLY wanted to have the whole series of Babysitters' Club books. I obviously never got there.

I am SO GLAD it's not just me!!!

This made me laugh out loud!!

1. I used to have over 200 GI Joes. I liked setting up dioramas and making up stories in my head about them. I do not, however, understand the impulse to purchase action figures and keep them in the box forever as investments. They're toys. Toys are to be played with and enjoyed, not stuffed in a safety deposit box, and if someday you find out that a toy you have that happens to still be in good shape is worth some money, well, bonus!

2. *Dons a catcher's mask* Don't blame you for being annoyed, especially by the recent movie (I find it disturbing also,) but have you ever read the original Charlie books? They are far, far superior to either movie, IMO. (The song lyrics are in them, but you can make up any music you like to go with them or just skip over them entirely. Yay books!)

See, that makes sense to me! Collect things to PLAY with! People who just get things and then... that's it? DO NOT WANT.

And I've been wondering if the book wouldn't be a billion times better to me! I should get my hands on it this summer...

1 - I collect stuff, well, when I have free/extra money I do, lol. I used to collect star trek dolls/action figures, it was just that pokemon-itis "gotta have them all!" I played with them when I was young, then they graduated to cool posed statue-esque toys, now they live packed away awaiting the day I once more have room and money :(

2 - I greatly prefer the older version, but then I like musicals (i LIKE the oompa-loompa song), and the new Johnny version scares me a bit. But I too find that commercial quite odd, the whole of it, and it comes on an awful damn lot.

3 - ? i am clueless who that person is. but your rant was amusing.

This is part of my problem with collecting things--I have no space for things. Well, I do, but my obsessive compulsive need for empty space prevents me from using all my available flat surfaces for stuff. I had to curtail my candle collection because it was getting out of control and who burns THAT many candles!

Yes! It's odd! It leaves me feeling unsettled.

And LOL! Yzerman played hockey for the Detroit Red Wings for pretty much his entire career (captain of the team for eons), and when he retired, he continued to work for them, but now he's going to be the general manager for Tampa Bay.

AND I HAVEN'T STOPPED BEING MAD, STEVE, SO DON'T THINK YOU'RE OFF THE HOOK.
