Hmmmmm, I can mostly rec series, but I don't think that's what you are looking for, so here are two stand-alones:

A Companion to Wolves
Swordspoint

Btw, I just realised that those two can been seen as part of series as well XD But they also work very well as stand-alones. ;)

Okay, series...
- The Hunger Games
- Nightrunner
- The Tamir Triad (but I've only read the first too so far)
- The Farseer (have only read the first one though)

Oh, just realised that Hunger Games is actually YA. Sorry.

I'm also reading Blood Ties right now. They are light and fun, but they feature vampires. Same goes for my guilty please the Sookie Stackhouse series. ;)

I tried to read the Kushiel series, but I couldn't get through the first book. Not my thing, I guess!

I will look Sharon Kay Penman. I'm not so fond if Phillipa Gregory, though.

Have you read Alison Weir? I'm pondering her "Innocent Traitor" novel

Alison Weir? I started to read one of her 'factual' books and couldn't get past page 42 because of her dismissive, one-sided opinion of anyone who opposed the myth of Elzabeth I. But that's just me...

Heh! I read her "The 6 Wives of Henry VIII" book and I liked it, but I certainly know what you mean about people with differing view points!

I will check that out!

And I would, if the price policy didn't piss me off so much. Like... I LOVE to have actual BOOKS. So if I buy a Dance With Dragons, I don't want to have to pay almost the same (!) price again for the kindle version! I already bought the damn book, you don't have to print the kindle version... I'd appreciate some kind of package deal where, if I buy a book, I can get the kindle version for an additional 2 quid on top of it, or something like that. You know what I mean?

No I don't! If you download a music track you don't get the CD cheap or vice versa! *scratches head*

I just finished reading Jo Graham's Numinous World series, which is historical fantasy set in various locations/eras of the ancient world. I really enjoyed the stories and characters, and she obviously knows her history well even when she's playing with it.

I saw you mention Alison Weir above -- I read Innocent Traitor a while ago and remember enjoying it, though I don't recall exactly how accurate her history was. But after all those seasons of The Tudors, I don't think inaccuracies have the power to bug me anymore. *g*

Oooh, that also sounds good!

Heh, so many great recs in here! Enough for the next year at least, I'd think *G*

yes, Innocent Traitor is the book I'm thinking about. And you're right about The Tudors *G*.

Hmmm....you might like Anne McCaffrey's work, particularly her Catteni series that starts with Freedom's landing.
