Discussion: Rec Yourself!

Don’t be shy, step up and Rec Yourself.

Writers, what is the PB story you would offer to someone who could only read one of your Prison Break fanfics? Just one fic.

Comment with a link, but not just a link - you have to tell us why you think that one story best exemplifies you as an author ( Read more... )

Aaa..a very nice thought. I like the theme of the discussion.
For me, it would be Michael/Sara fic called How Bad? I wrote only recently. It deals with the events of the night Sara left the door opened for Michael. And it means a lot to me for two reasons ( ... )

That’s exactly what we were looking for in the discussion!

And what great reasons for choosing your fic. The creative urge can be a beautiful thing and having the physical expression of that to point to and remember that feeling is something very special. Especially if it’s something that resonated emotionally with you. Thank you for sharing!

I would rec my fic Striptease. Not because it's a particularly good fic; the language is awkward and the plot thinner than a bulimic Barbie doll, not to mention that almost all the characters are wildly OOC at some point or other.

But I would still rec it, because it was kind of my break-through. It was a first for me in many ways (not that kind, you pervs); my first incest fic, first published PWP, and the first ever fic I got more than ten reviews for ^^

Not to mention, it sort of came to define me as a writer. I write humour, smut and fluff - preferably all in one mix - and I feel that this fic is representative for my style and habits as a writer. My fics have changed a bit since then, but I feel that when I first published it in the summer of 2006, it gave me the foundation to keep writing, and for keeping with a distinct style.

In fact, though the fic could probably do with a re-write or three, I won't do that - because this fic is the perfect example of me as a writer.

That’s an excellent reason to chose your fic! Not only is it personally meaningful, but if it showcases what and how you like to write, (especially such a unique combination), then I’d think it would be the perfect thing to show to someone and say “this is what I do.” Especially if it made you happy enough and encouraged you to keep writing more. Thank you for sharing!

Since I am basically someone who could discuss my writing until the end of frakking time, this is really nothing more than determining which story is that story for me.

And here's the funny thing, I think up until about five seconds ago I would have said Awakening because, well, I simply love it so. It, at the time, stretched everything I thought I knew about my writing and on top of that rings true to me for canon with the characters whilest totally taking them into alternate reality severely. I mean, Sara in love with Lincoln, totally unbelievable, right? But no, I love it, and I love them, and I love that story. With like every fiber of my being. Every. Fiber.

But the real answer has to be Sweet Misery and that's not just because it's you (chanchito_z) that it will be discussed with, and has been discussed with so much. It was much the same process as Awakening as far as pushing myself and yet canonly achieving what I wanted to with the characters themselves, but ultimately it's better, IMHO, because it is a fully realized character study ( ... )

That's a great reason to chose a fic, too. Especially in that you made a comparison with one you would have previously chosen as a fave. I would suspect that would involve growth as a writer - if you can see how you've progressed or improved upon what you had felt was your best effort. I think that's important, too because I would suspect that if anyone involved in a creative endeavor sat back and thought they'd done their best work without ever being able to think that they could improve upon it, they might become stagnant in their creative process. So perhaps that's a lesson for us to take from this. Maybe I should have called it favorite fic “so far ( ... )

I have a soft spot for a few stories that I had a hard time completing, but I would go with Hemato-logy, because it's my pet. It's a Michael and Lincoln general vignette, from their childhood to the beginning of season 2. No pushing me outside of my box or stretching any boundaries and it got written by itself. I just like the theme and the way I developed it, the structure, the ending. I'm never rarely happy with my stories, but this one is the exception.
It's also characteristic of a kind of fics that I write, short and more thematic than actually narrative, so I guess it makes a good 'sample'.

I like that. Your favorite story can be one that you enjoy, for a variety of reasons, or just be one that makes you happy. And since we write because we enjoy it, it makes perfect sense to chose one you not only enjoyed creating, but also enjoy reading and remembering. I think that's an awesome reason to chose a fic as your "one." Thanks for sharing!
